Pirate adam got a reaction from Canute in Plastic or Wood models? Your Favorite?
I agree with mtaylor. You probably have more or less all of the tools you need to build one of the Model Expo kits if you have been building in plastic for a while. One thing I would add to the tool list if you don't have one is a pin vise and a set of small drills. Little files are also good to have. I build lots of plastic airplane models in addition to wood ship models. The biggest difference between plastic and most of the wood model kits is that you will have to do a bit more shaping, sanding, etc. on the wood models. A cool thing about the wood kits is you will most likely end up with a kit that is very unique and your own depending on how you finish, rig, etc.

Mike I would add another item to Greg accessories which will be a good one and that's the Sensitive Drilling Attachment. Great when you drilling a lot of holes using very small drill bit's. They really do make a lot of good accessories thats for sure. Gary

Pirate adam got a reaction from FrankWouts in HMS Winchelsea - FINISHED - 1764 - by Chuck (1/4" scale)
Congratulations Chuck. This has been an amazing build to follow, and the engineering that you have put into the kit is amazing. I have learned a lot from following, and the end result is incredible.

The frame alignment jig is genius and so simple (like so many genius things are). Something similar could be easily adopted to any plank on frame build by carefully measuring room and space. I am putting it in my mental notebook for my planned upcoming Swan build.

Pirate adam got a reaction from Saburo in NAIAD 1797 by Bitao - 1:60
Bitao,
This is amazing work. Your craftsmanship is beyond most of us on the site, but I love seeing the limits of what is possible. It gives a lot of inspiration and ideas for techniques even for those of us not quite as skilled. This is one of the few models I have seen with the pump dales actually in place.

This is spectacular! The downside is we get spoiled by seeing years of work in each installment.

Here we are with all the little bits temporarily in place. Next I will work on the rudder and various cleats before turning to the upper deck.

The rigging is amazing Johann. I'm not sure I've ever really seen anything quite like it. I am going to read this section again and again before I do any rigging on my model.

I have also been working on lots of little bits here and there. I am especially happy with how the capstan turned out.

Construction on the galley has proceeded in fits and starts since the last post. Time for some updates. I wasn't sure about adding treenails to the deck. I decided on yes, and am very happy with the result. Nails were made from cherry.

I have also spent the last several months learning some new skills. I turned all of the cannons and swivel guns on a Sherline lathe. There is a whole bag of practice cannons before I got to these. Next I need to learn silver soldering to finish these guys up as well as the various other metal working on the ship.

I also managed to frame in the stern windows. Not sure yet if I will add something to simulate glass. Zoomed in photos are brutal, lol.
