turning a manual mill in to a CNC mill
mtaylor replied to garyshipwright's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I can't speak for Sherline, but one disadvantage on many mills is that you lose that capability to use the hand wheels. -
Depending on where you ordered them from, the vents should be good. More and more accessories for model ships are showing up in the 3D printer world.

Oh, just put a couple of squiggles on it and tell anyone that notices that it's the lettering and show them the full size photo. Might be good for some chuckles.

Maury, looks good from here. BTW, is it me (I'm awaiting new glasses) or are the deadeyes upside down?
-
Try it Maury. Sometimes the pickling eats through the copper so check that. If it's clear coated that will have to be removed. You won't be able to blacken the cut edge though so that will need some paint. I discovered these little problems the hard way.

Michael, my mind is truly blown at this point. Working door latch at scale. I'm in total awe.

You're making great progress, OC. Hmm....skeleton pirates. Not having seen the movie, were they actually on the ship?

Well Sam, I do get to use that excuse as no dog and no wife. Painting is going slow. I'm cleaning up the flash and still sorting out parts. I realized a few things today... there's no parts to detail the inside. None.. zip. Even if one did build the radio rack, winch, and seats... the top is open. So, the chopper will be a hollow shell. I also found that the intakes are of the "air filter" type and not the wide open like the German model. Makes me happy, that did. No pictures, I've got stuff spread all over the workbench and other parts of the shop right now. When I'm ready for assembly, I'll do photos. Now if the guns would just get here.... <sigh.

HMS Victory by helge - Caldercraft - 1:72
mtaylor replied to helge's topic in New member Introductions
Hello Helge. Welcome to MSW. Maple is good choice (if the grain isn't too visible) but holly is superb for decking. -

Those were valid reason. Another reason was that a radial is air-cooled. Having a hit in the radiator far from the carrier or any land would be a bad thing.

I was reading some on the Warfare History Network and following some links and ran into this: https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2018/12/11/japans-underwater-aircraft-carriers/ I thought some might find this interesting.

At some point they went to nets to capture them better without the plane disintegrating. Even then, a net catch was still brutal. There are some videos were the plane caught the cable, but the aft end ripped away (battle damage?). The net saved the pilot and gunner's lives.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
