    Hi Anja,

Great that you started a new build(ingblog).
Poor Sjors, now his netting will never come to an end :D
Many years ago I also build a Spanish Gallion (1607). Just a plastic one, but oke...
I took a picture of it, but with the Agamemnon in the background, it looks a bit poor....

Hello from south west Washington on a nice wet day.  The Long Beach peninsula to be exact.

I took the plunge and bought my first wood boat model.  I purchased the Model Shipways Phantom for my first try.  I am a model railroader so I have built building kits.
After looking through the parts and the instructions, I am a bit intimidated so far.  I am looking forward to getting started however.

And the underside of the turret. At first I thought it were etched lines, looking more closely ... it's a mesh!!!

    Cheers

OMG Brasso!!!   I remember polishing my belt buckles with that stuff before every inspection.  The first few hours was the hardest on a new one to get the darned lacquer finish off the buckle and get to the brass.   I also remember worn out brass drain pipes that had been polished with Brasso from the late 1930's to the early 60's when the academy finally realized the cost to replace the piping was not worth the shine.

    Howdy Mark,

Thanks for the link to that idea.  However, I am certain that mine ARE NOT going to come out looking as perfect as many of these talented folk!  However, I soaking up the ideas, and any thought is a good thought.  As a I used to tell my children, "Even bad examples can be good examples....of what NOT to do."  Now, whether they listened, that's another issue...

Silkspan or Modelspan as it seems to be called now is an excellent medium for making sails certainly at smaller scales.

I used it on my French Seventy-four build, and the effect of wind behind the sail is simply achieved using a hair dryer.

There is a technique to forming the sails but all the various strengthening patches along with seams and cringles can be incorporated, and it is both strong and translucent.

I joined the Dummies website.  I'm probably at the bottom of the class.  As I try to piece the ideas together, it seems this may be a lot of work.  Not that I have a problem with that.  I just wonder how long it will last.

And then there's dust.  If the model is not sealed from dust, once you clean the dust off the sails, it looks like those sails will have to be trimmed again.

I really don't know where this will lead.  Right now I envision the J-Class model I am about to tackle to take the place of the model that the seller of the property has already sold.  She had a schooner, that was close to the same size as the 1:35 J-Class Endeavour, sitting in her dining room.  Replacing it with Endeavour just seemed like the right thing to do.
