Thanks Steven and Carl and all others for the likes. I have largely completed the running rigging and all that now remains is to decide on the sails. Should I leave it with bare yards or bend sails which may obscure a lot of detail in the rigging or maybe not. I have a cunning plan to do the sails in Silkspan to reproduce the bellying of the sails ( see my carrack build for a similar technique).

I have fitted the rope Jacob's ladders for access to the "crow's nests". I have positioned them so that they would not foul the running rigging . This was before ratlines appeared on the shrouds, at least in the Mediterranean.

woodrat got a reaction from Schrader in The Elusive Hulc by woodrat - FINISHED - 1:32 - plank-on-frame - a speculative reconstruction of a mediaeval merchantman
Thanks, Steven, Alberto, andrew and Tony. The Beast is taking shape but I don't know anymore than you what this will be. Since I have applied the bottom strakes, the hull has banana'd a bit and the stress generated has pulled the keel plank away from the support. This seems to indicate that the hull is finding its own curvature. I rather like the appearance so far and no matter if such a beast was never built in Europe, I'm sure there is an alternate snarky universe in which it was.

woodrat got a reaction from KARAVOKIRIS in Le Gros Ventre 1767 by woodrat - Scale 1:48 - POF - French exploration vessel
Having taken 5 1/2 years off from this build to complete 2 mediaeval vessels, I feel that I have neglected the Fat Belly too long. I have restarted the build.

here is the completion of the framing of the bow module. Phew!
The jarrah has been oiled to nourish the wood. It wont remain shiny and the wood will darken.
hawse holes are yet to be made.

Here is the start of planking.
The garbord strakes
and the next two strakes. Note the rabbeted breasthook at stem and stern into which to bolt the strakes. This I think is the "collar" seen on a lot of pictures of hulcs.

It is comforting to think that the unfortunate Baker, when he did vanish away, reappeared in the universe where all Boojums have vanished away.😁

woodrat got a reaction from BANYAN in Yenikapi12 by woodrat - FINISHED - 1/16 scale - a small Byzantine merchant vessel of the 9th century
I got the crumbs out by turning upside down and hitting it with a wooden mallet. I am worried that the hulc model may turn out to be a bread-barge in disguise after all. So the Port Admiral may still win.

Just to show I haven't repented the errors of my ways, here is the "keel plank" being heat bent to shape and stuck to supporting molds .
