Tadeusz43 got a reaction from Y.T. in Your best sail cloth and technique
Hi,
I make sails for models in scale 1:75 with seams of the cloths sewing marked
with single thread ( courtesy of Admiral ).
For models in scale 1:100 I use computer printing of cloths lines and reef bands on thermal transferring paper for ironing on to sails fabric .
Sails leech, head and foot ropes are fixed in its place with use of textile adhesive .
Material for sails I prefer is old bed linen many, many times washed.
Work step by step
1.Make paper stencil for each sail and check it’s dimensions on your model.
2.With soft pencil transfer all lines in to fabric – add stripe 5-7 mm around
sail edges.
3.Make all necessary lines on fabric using sewing machine and thin thread with light brown or beige color.
For sails with thermal transferring of line any sewing is not necessary.
Cut of sail shape.
4. Fold the edges stripe to reverse side of sail and apply textile adhesive
5. Put sail on flat surface protected against glue adhesion ( wax paper )
and fix it with pins and nails for forming clews.
Using textile adhesive attach thread around sail and form clews and cringles as necessary.
After adhesive excess removal from sail surface and final ironing your sail is ready.

Hi Steve,
Thicker thread is for the standing rigging that is stays, shrouds
whereas thinner thread for running rigging.

Hi,
During my visit in Karlskrona last week I have seen works in shipwright workshop.
There wooden ship boats are constructed and repaired using traditional methods.

Hi
I am using dilute nitrocellulose transparen lacquer which stiffens lnayards and is invisible.
With the same lacquer I protect all knots in rigging.

Hi,
I use transfer paper to be applied decoration on the sails made of fabric but the flags I print on rice paper because the fabric is in my opinion too thick and stiff for small flags.

Hi druxey,
It is true that Vic was rebuilt many times but this detail of ship structure is looking to be original.

Tadeusz43 got a reaction from starbo in Fram by Tadeusz43 - scale 1:100 - polar exploration ship
Hi,
Construction of the polar ship Fram model is part of a larger project POLAR.
I am going to build model ships Farm, Maud and Gjøa all in scale 1:100
The construction will be conducted at the same time starting from the hull through the equipment and rigging.
Hulls of ships Fram and Maud will be built as POB for bulkheads was used birch plywood 4 mm thick
planks was lime strips 2x5 mm ,.
The smallest Gjøa will have a hull constructed as “bread and butter” material used HDF board.
Original construction drawings of all ships I have got from Norwegian Maritime Museum ( contact person Mr Per Gisle Galåen Per.Gisle.Galaen@marmuseum.no )but not all of them were sufficient information to build models, there was a lack of equipment drawings and plans of the deck.
The best are the drawings of the ship Gjøa because it plans for modeling also instruction is included but in Norwegian only.
With the help of our colleague Igorsky and additional shipment from NMM was possible to complete the necessary documentation for the ship Fram but for Maud will be necessary partial improvisation
on area of deck arrangement and equipment.
I collect also all available photos of this ships from my archive and the net.
Drawings was scanned and scale was reduced up to required 1:100 in computer .

Tadeusz43 got a reaction from BobG in Sequence of Rigging and Attaching Sails to Yardarms
Hi,
Short Guide to period ship model rigging.
After hull finishing and mast installation is time for „spider works” it is rigging.
All belaying racks , cleats must be already installed also is recommended to install eye bolts on ship decks or drill holes for it .
My sequence is:
1.Standing rigging – stays , shrouds, backstays, bowsprit standing rigging. I start with this works from foremast down shrouds and proceed going up and next to stern.
With proper tension of shrouds, stays and backstays position of mast is adjusted.
This is very important to control position of masts using plumb-line.
2.Yards furnishing. I install blocks and standing rigging on yards as also yard’s truss or parral. After fully furnishing of yards is time for attaching sails and running rigging: lifts, clew lines, leech and bunt lines, reef tackles
Next is time for attach sails to the yards.
3. Yards with sails are installed on masts and required running rigging is made - from topmast sails going down.
4. Remaining running rigging is installed: sheets and tacks, braces.
With proper tensions of sheets, tacks and braces the yards are shifted into
required position.
Tension of bowlines can help form bunt of sails.

Tadeusz43 got a reaction from jchbeiner in Art of period shipbuilding
Hi,
Art of shipbuilding.
Due to the lack of scientific methods of calculation and design of ships
ship building in the old days was a kind of art and everything depended on the experience of employee master of shipbuilding.
Gathered here from my archive of photos from various museums showing how ships were built centuries ago.
A few photos from the net is because old shipyards are still in the Navy possession or a ban on photographing in some museums.
Project.
Construction of a new ship ordered by the King was preceded by a performance of the model to the Admiralty can assess whether the project meets its requirements. Many of such models have survived to our time, they show the details of construction of the hull, we call it The Admiralty Models.
Because in those days there were no scientific method stability calculations all based on the experience of masters of shipbuilding.

Tadeusz43 got a reaction from JPett in Preferred support when planking?
Hi,
I use two types of support for planking.
Foto 1 This is simplest way for support hull during planking
Can be difficult to use with some kit buildings because they have integral deck as part of structure.
Foto2 - 4 Revolving jig for hull planking
For models scrap built is possible easily apply temporary brackets on bow and stern part of keel for attach to jig.
