i have an amati plank bender which i carefully apply more and more pressure letting the tool cut slightly into the rear of the walnut 2x2. I also use a small travel iron and steam to get the planks to bend.....it really is trial and error to see what works best for you....

keep going...despite its obvious faults with the kit it does make a good looking model when finished...

cheers petervisser....i am not particularly bothered about the historical accuracy of the build in any of the kits i complete, i just enjoy the hobby for what it is ....hull nearing completion......
-
cheers robdurant....i try to work with the kit as far as I can to see how they actually look like when completed....I sometimes change little bits if i think the supplied bits are rubbish which is often the case with some of corels fittings...

I dont think I will rig the deck cannons as they never seem to look right, but I may change my mind yet and go for just a simple rope...

I have a couple of corel kits and an old panart one...Royal Caroline that i won on ebay for about £70.00....need a bigger house to put them all in....
-
ships wheel, capstan and water pump detail.....the hatches at the stern are cast metal ones i had left over from a previous build (Bellona)....they looked far better than the plywood ones supplied so used those....the historical accuracy police will be up in arms.....
-
cheers hamilton.......enjoy Bellona....you can just see Greyhound hidden behind unicorns hull and next to Bellona in the first pic.
-
bit more progress on unicorn.....the quality of some of corels the ironwork is awful....snaps as soon as you look at it, but i keep going....

softly softly catchy monkey... -
addition of the rudder and a few deck fittings.....working with corels fittings is always an interesting experience but i go with them for the main just to see what the results look like...

"Cheating" with alternative materials?
harlequin replied to Brewerpaul's topic in Wood ship model kits
i was in the british army for quite a while....the Parachute Regiment to be exact, so why boats instead of aircraft?...not sure, but I like to call it improvisation not cheating......as they drummed it into us in the army, you always improvise, 😀 -
quarter gallery side wall fitted....corels cast fittings for the galleries are not great....will have to see how they fit and go with them...
-
It is by no means perfect but i had to work with what corel supplied...I actually like using all the stuff in the kits just to see what it turns out like....the transom is in place with all the decoration added...the quarter galleries may prove to be more exacting but here goes...
-
upper deck planking finished.....support columns added and the transom has been glued, clamped and is now in place.
-
hello from the North of England
-
The transom next......it appears several builders have struggled with this bit, indeed the newer versions of this kit have been altered by corel, so will have to see what happens...

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
