I just looked at the pic again above and realized one of the single blocks is rigged incorrectly...that sailor is going to be fired! I have a bit of a dilemma. The Revell directions call for the sheet and tack line to be 'medium' diameter line. That is the 0.018" kit included line. That works out to 5" circumference line at 1/96 scale. That is pretty close to the online tables for rigging 44 gun ships which show the line as 5 1/2". My dilemma is this: Syren Ship line is really a much, much nicer quality but the Revell line has a better color - more 'hemp like' (slightly greenish hue). So, if it can be done, can the line be tinted? If so, how?

Thanks for stopping by Tim. Yes, I found the same thing to be true. Those guns had to pack quite a wallop.

Thank you Evan. Given my lack of experience in the rigging area of this build I decided to follow the Revell directions and bring the main sheet and tack lines through the gun deck bulwark. But...I really hated those pathetic nobs to secure the line so I removed them and placed some spare cleats instead. It does look better. Accurate? Only if I lucked out. I did not look into this matter much since these items will be barely visible. A little closer...

Michael, for whatever it is worth (I am a very much a novice at this hobby), I used Plastruct liquid cement to help keep the small rigging blocks and lines at their positions. It is not a very strong cement (except on plastic) and it seems to be holding for now. It dries very quickly, is practically invisible, and a little goes a long way. Dave

Very nice. I like the way they look mounted on board.

Are those hammock cranes with the davits or is that some of the davit hardware? Very nice symmetry in all those pieces.

Interesting. Heavy seas. Guns outboard. Someone just recently mentioned how this is believed to have added stability. Ahhh...if only photos were around back then...

I love it Augie. Because of the fine detail you put into her your build looks bigger than it actually is: I have to remind myself of the scale here.

Well, for what it's worth you have convinced me...but mine are already on ship so they will remain, like my transom, unchanged. You have, Evan, without doubt made my attention to detail awareness more acute for the the remaining portion of my build and I will continue to watch yours with fascination and admiration.

Those decks look superb. How do they dry fit so far. Camber fore and aft will flex the deck ever so slightly.

I not sure either Denis. I will look into it though. Unfortunately there are no firm descriptors of these items from the launch period so I am sure Revell used some interpretive license. I can't fault them for that in an otherwise classic and beautiful kit model.

Thanks Henry. I am going to move those line origins to the spar deck. I have plenty of cleats to use for placement but will need to look carefully at the rest of the Revell plans so as not to foul other line placements. It is a low waist.

Ah ha...I have seen the Savannah. She used to be anchored at Patriots Point here in Charleston. I kinda' wondered what happened to her.

@ Denis: you are absolutely right, lower sheet and tack lines. They are 3" circ. lines. Also you are giving me credit where none is due: I have not figured 'to sail' or 'not to sail' into the equation yet. But I appreciate the advice. @ Henry: Thanks for looking into it. The model has the lines running through the bulwark and secured onto a lame looking peg inside. I believe a sheave would look better though...and if it is supposed to secure to the spar deck then that is even better. Since the gun deck is lit I want to try and get that right. @ Tom: Thanks for noting the MS version. And of course it has worth. Every vote here counts for something. :)

Thanks Henry and Popeye. Now I at least know what they are called. This is new territory for me and I thought I had a little time before having to learn the sailing tackle nomenclature. I appreciate the education you guys can give... I looked again at the running rigging directions and sure enough they are lower sheet and tack lines. I don't know how I missed that yesterday. But they do originate at the gun deck per Revell.

The aft section of the spar deck is ready to attach but Revell has several lines secured at the gun deck. I believe they are lower main and foremast halyard clew lines - but they are not labeled and I have not found a label with confidence. The 1927 refit shows this line to be 3" circumference and this seems small compared to the instructions so more research is needed. At any rate I sized the running rigging to support whatever the research tells me. At least it is a starting assortment. There are some color variations so I will need to make a decision of which to use.

hmmm...there are alternatives. There is quite a discussion going on in force9's Connie build about whether they should have lids at all. Looking great on the build. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/270-uss-constitution-by-force9-revell-plastic-revisiting-the-classic-196-kit/page-18

Life has really gotten in the way of hobbies of late. I decided to try air brushing a custom color (antique semi-gloss white) onto the 'cornice' of the captains cabin and the masts with their corresponding fighting tops. This is my FIRST attempt to do what many of you folks have mastered: spraying the enamel to the part. I have never gone through 7cc of paint so fast. It did cover the parts evenly BUT I ran out of the custom color before I finished with the parts (mizzen and foremast still have primer only). So now I have to bring home some more pipettes to measure the proportions of paint for the custom color and tackle the remaining parts. Rats. I hate learning curves.
