jablackwell reacted to Koppalakki in USS Missouri by Koppalakki - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC - 1991 configuration with Pontos detail set
And prolly the last update before finishing!
After seeing this I knew exactly what I wanted to have on the helipad!
Only one I could find in 1/350 for the moment was a Sea Dragon from Orange hobby so that had to do!
The chopper is made of resin and some PE details. I dressed her up with my own details including grab handles wires etc. details.
And on the deck! Had to move the Pioneer a bit and added one deck equipment tractor.

After the stand was finished, I looked at the whole thing from all angles and realized the ship was on a port tack instead of straight up! So I did some shimming and sanding and straightened the whole thing. The lesson here is, check everything from all angles every time.

Re my earlier comment on an exhaust fan -- here's a picture of the $35 fan I got on Amazon, mounted in a 12x12 shipping box, which works fine. I attached a handle to the sliding basement window so that I can pull it open and close it again. Fan moves 220 CFM.
I just added the second coat of primer and this little fan works really well. There are fumes at the start, but they get dramatically reduced after a few minutes.

David

One complete whaleboat. At least now I know how high I need to put the boom to clear a whaleboat on the tail feathers. Not sure if I want to make one at a time, and see if I get any better as I go, or make the remaining 3 simultaneously.
Couldn't resist to see how one looks on the ship.

Here's the hull, taped for painting, and after the first primer coat.
It's winter here, and while I've painted my other models in the garage in milder weather, my basement workroom isn't well-ventilated, and the fumes are pretty strong. So I ordered a small but high CFM flow exhaust fan that I can put into a window. It comes Thursday, and no more painting until it's in.

jablackwell reacted to semorebutts in Bismarck by Semorebutts - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/200 scale - PLASTIC - with MK1 detail set
Hey everyone, I was on a roll with the cranes so I figured I might as well just finish them.
First was to finish installing the pulleys.
and with that done i was ready to paint. This part allways Makes me nervous. Which is why I’m procrastinating on the launches.
45 minutes later the deed was done.
theres the launches. I shudder when i think of painting them.
also the Bismarck came out to play. I have to really start to build a case. A 1/4” thick acrylic 5 sided box the shape of a fishtank should do. Now I just have to make it.

I'm starting to build a stand for my boat since none comes with this kit.

Some progress on different items:
Picture 1 is the bilge keels -- below the blue arrow. Picture 2 is 4 small decks that will be on top of the large one. Picture 3 is the stack subassembly, partially completed showing how the planking works for the side. Picture 4 is a completed stack, ready for varnish and ultimately painting. Regards,

Some smaller details I've been working on.
Added some warning lights near the aft boom.
Used some 0.2mm brass wire to get the basic shape of the lights.
After this the light bulb section was build up using white glue.
After painting the bulb section is first painted chrome silver, then some light clear orange.
The usual electric lines added.
One RQ-2 Pioneer standing on the platform ready to be launched.
Some addition details to the pioneer equipment.
Containers for the equipment added behind the aft turret.
Started to add the life rafts.
Some grab handle ladders and some leasure activities added.
All the rest of the directors finished.
Anchors and jack staff finished.

So the Work on the launch is continue slow and steady.
It became too monotonous for me so I changed it up and cut out all the orrs
Still not wanting to go back to the launches I decided to start on the cranes. So I cut all the pieces that will be needed out And sanded them
Then started assembly. This is much funner and way easier than the launches.

John, I thought you would ask. It's a new setup called Real Model Pilots. They have some designs but will do bespoke as well. They are all done bu 3d printer and whilst they look a bit rough out of the box they paint up nicely. They will paint them for you at a price !!!!Have a look at their website
www.realmodelpilots.co.uk
Good luck.

Just in case anyone out there is still interested I did manage to source some 1/16 scale pilots to go with my models. Horrible price but for me they just make things complete and well worth it.
They are WW1 pilots and were purchased unpainted.

Pic 1 shows the horizontal paper strips mounted on the thin plywood. I used spray adhesive. They are then cut out for mounting on the hull according to the guides pictured in my previous post.
The instructions call for mounting the strips with pins only (there are about 18 on each side), then outlining them in pencil, then removing them to remove the vertical guides, then gluing them on again.
I realized that the only reason for that two-step process is to get the vertical guides off the hull, and it occurred to me that I could just pencil mark their position, then remove them, and then mount the horizontal strips with glue in one step. Pics 2-4 show the marking process, and it should save me a bunch of time. I also hate pinning things as the pins come loose, or put holes in the wood that have to be filled, so this avoids that.
Pic 5 is the first strip I've cut out. Strong sharp scissors work fine. I'll post again when I have some strips glued on.
Regards,
David
