I haven't considered adding a filler block. I don't think the planks need added support as they are 3x7 mm strips but now that you have brought this up I might test this out just in case

Smart idea, better be safe then sorry.  3 X 7 is pretty stout and should work but - - - 

Any pre-bending to relieve the strain at the bow?

3mm........yea, that is a bit thick to me........the planking I use is around 1.8mm.    this has been the norm for all of my builds.   it'll give you a lot of lee-way with sanding......that's a big plus!

Piet , yes i l be soaking the planks and bend them temporary in place till they dry. then i l be sanding them so they ll fit snugle against the planks already in place. i want to make this as good as i can

Popeye, even tought they are 3 mm they are still flexible enough (even the 4x5 masterplanks) and i am hoping to have to do as little sanding as possible

 

For me this will be lots of learning because its the first time i am really planking (when i did the virginia i just wne for it and hoped for the best and hought i could sand/fill any problems)

I have taken a day of Friday to take care of some financial business but that will leave plenty of time to continue the sanding , might even be able to finish so I can start pre bending

I am now waiting on the last 2 of the side parts to dry . so tomorrow I can begin pre-bending the master planks

woot I started planking . the first 2 master planks are soaked and drying

had to do add extra reinforcements as there would have been no hold for the planks

I have a couple of small ones but thet are metal and very heavy

I presume yours are plastic and a lot easier to use

they are from the brand CraftRight. I bought 4 sets of 2. so far one has broken when I put too much pressure on it. they can be reversed so you can do clamping spreading. one thing annoying is that the orange non marring pads slide off too easy.

 

overall I good investment because I use them all the time as you know

planking is well on its way and I am enjoying it a lot

 

I am tapering the planks at the bow so they all have a smooth flow

How is it bending Adriaan ?

It looks fine but I have had problems bending planks that thick

I guess it's all down to enough soaking

Yours do look to be coming around fine

they bend pretty easily actualy. for the middle of the hull i dont even have to soak them . yes flex them a bit and they are ready to go

The difficult part is the stern , where the rudder meets the upper rounded part.

I am happy so far with how the stern is turning out.

 

so far I am at 6 rows of planks with 9 more to go till I reach the keel

Those duckbill clamps look to work really well, about how many planks can you clamp at a time?

Nice work there.  Yes, planking can be a slow process but if it's any consolation, I'm right here doing the same.  Someone on here once advised 'treat each plank as a modeling project'.  They were right!

Enjoying your build as I am almost at the same stage as you on exactly the same ship from OcRee. So far I have found the OcRee kit very good - nice clean laser cuts and very tite fits !!!

I don't do more then one plank on each side , but it depends, the planks at the stern twist a lot so they need clamping between every bulkhead to keep them tight against the previous plank. as I only have 7 (1 broke) I can only do 1 plank

yes each off the planks I am adding now need to be tapered , the edges angled then soaked for pre bending before it goes on

but honestly I am enjoying it, slowly you can see the ship go from a skeleton to a well rounded lady

after adding one more row of planks I decided that it was time to trim down the excess at the bow and stern.

this to ensure I follow the same profile as the keel .

they will need to be sanded down to about 4 mm in thickness but that will be done when all planks are on

 

you may notice that on the 3rd bulkhead it seems like the planks are not nicely flowing but that is because from there I am widening the plank till its at full width . I will need to do this for the next few planks

They seem to be coming forward nicely Adriaan

Very similar to the bow of the Thermopylae if a lot bigger

I don't know whether a sharp bow is easier than one like the Endeavour or not

I hope to be back in action in a few days but my ribs are still very sore
