Thanks Wayne, yes, the Morgan has been on my Bucket List for a while now, and since I've been on her numerous times I really wanted to build it.  I just finished the Constitution so my cannon craving was satisfied.

OK Guys & Gals, I have a question...Where do you find the dry transfer letters, or any simple means of adding the name of the ship on the stern and bow sides. I need white and gold letters about 3/16" or even 1/8" thick. I have checked Hobby Lobby and they do not carry them anymore. Help.....(I'm currently looking online, but still striking out, probably becasue I don't remember the proper name for a correct search.)

Can't help on dry transfers.  One of our local hobby stores does carry some.....sometimes.

Well, looks like the movie is tomorrow instead of today, my Admiral got a big wad of shampoo in her eye, and her eye swelled shut and hurts like h@#$, so she's out of commission. So review will be delayed a day. Thanks for input on dry transfers, got any other suggestions?

I'm afraid not John.  I would have said Hobby Lobby but you already covered that.  Only other thought is JoAnne's if you have one nearby.

Well, a little more progress. Started to work on stern details, and deck underlays for the hatches and coamings to come later. I decided to mark them off and plank around them rather than gluing them to the top of the already planked deck. So here's some pictures for you know who.....

Sorry John.... I haven't much of a clue.  Perhaps making your own stencil off something from the internet and painting?  I know ..... not easy.

 

There is also 'decal paper' which can be purchased from a place like Micro Mark or someplace heavy into model trains.  You get a pattern you want electronically, use the right decal paper (usually either a white or transparent background) and run it through your ink jet printer.  I've used that for some airplane stuff and it's ok.

Maybe you can ask Popeye for advice.

He did the same thing with a lot of names for his ships.

I know he is using a printer but he can help you.

hey there John......I used the Testor's decal maker.  not too sure if it can be purchased in a hobby store........I know they carry the  'basic'  program.   I had to get mine from the site.

it called the standard edition.   with the basic program,  you cannot import anything into it,  but with the standard program,  you can.  I've been looking around for all kinds of thing to import.......stencils and stuff.  it does have it's draw-backs though......it's a work in progress.

 

if you just want lettering,  try some of these....I hope they are good for you.

Hi Popeye, I just saw your post. Thanks for the info, I'll see what I can find. This must be a problem for every shipbuilder that has to put a name on a ship. That would be a good cottage industry, or maybe something that the kit makers could put in the kit. I guess some of Augie's spiders could paint it on for me.

I'm kinda surprised that you didn't get anything in the kit.   the good thing with the decal maker is that it is sized for the decal paper half sheets.  using photo shop or something similar,  unless you size down the field,  you may run the risk of the decal not beiing all the way on the paper.  all ink jet printers will not print white or metallic colors.   very little can be done with the matallics......but you can cheat with the white issue,  by using white decal paper.  you'll more than likely have to change the background to get rid of the residual white

Instead of dry transfer letters, have you considered creating decals for the name?  I went that route for the nameboards on Bluenose and am pleased with the result.  You can find a short description on the first page of my log - just scroll down to post #10.

 

I have been quietly enjoying your log - Morgan is one of those ships that holds a special place for me.  I think I was about 13 the first time I visited her, and I get back to Mystic whenever I get the chance.  Keep up the good work - I'll be following along.

Thanks again Popeye for the information. As soon as I get a minute I'll look these up. I'm surprised they don't include this in the kits too. They have far more resources than we do and it wuld be cost effective.
