Charles W Morgan by texxn5 - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64

Recommended Posts

Hi Mike, welcome aboard. Yeah, I might be replacing certain things too, not sure what but I'll address it when I get there. I've been aboard her several times, and will go aboard again when in Mystic in September. I am not planning on double planking at this point. Most of what I screw up will be underneith copper plating, so I'm not overly worried about below the water line. Unfortunately I'm the one responsible for the EEL thread, joking with Augie and Sjors. It went a lot further than I expected.

Looking good John.

My how topics change and the crazy directions they go. Personally I love the smoked unagi.

Looks like you plankings going well. All and all its just another stick in the hull. (shameless PF pun) :dancetl6:

Don't you just love the rhythm of planking? How about a pic of the back stern underwrap area, thats the cool spot on her, or are you afraid to expose her curves to this motley crew. :D

Keep up the excellent work my friend.

Hi Keith, isn't that the truth....crazy directions.  Smoked unagi, well ok, if you want to go there!......Thanks for the comments on the planking.  I'll be posting some pictures this afternoon on today's progress.  Exposing curves to this crew could be asking for trouble for sure.  Never trust a sailor since they have one in every port.....

Well, I got some more done over the last few days.  Managed to get the planking done.  Needs some clean up and a little sanding but overall it wasn't as bad as I thought, and I actually enjoyed doing it.  I have some under deck bracing to do, and some planning and then it's time to plank the deck.  Here's some progress pictures.  I figure a good portion of this will be covered by the copper plates, primer and paint, so some of my mistakes are acceptable.

Hey John your ship is looking great! I will be following this post eagerly. If I can ever get the hang of this modeling I would love to build the Morgan as well as the Constitution. I always end up visiting the Morgan once a year. Mystic has a lot to do for the kids and I get to poke around the boats! Also got to see the Constitution this weekend which is always an amazing adventure.

Good luck on you build!

Hi Scott, thanks for following and welcome aboard. I'll be visiting both the Morgan and the Constitution in September on a New England RV Trek. I've been aboard both several times. I love Mystic, got to stay in The Mansion at Mystic Inn the first time I went there. It's where Bogey & McCall spent their honey moon. Came complete with a butler and housekeeper/cook. It was a total fluke of luck that I'll never forget.

Nice  Morgan build, keep up the good work. Recently I casually looked through the build logs looking for Morgan models and unless I'm mistaken ( which I could be, I didn't scour the archives that hard) I only see one other Morgan model, one built by one of the moderators in 1980. I wonder why there are so few, given that she is still in existence and well documented. Not to mention the fact that she is due to be relaunched in two weeks, her hull fully restored and anticipating a full sailable rig too. So just two Morgans. There must be two dozen Victories and many Cutty Sarks. I wonder why the Morgan has been given less attention?  I also wanted to mention the book The Yankee Whaler by Clifford W Ashley, or Ashley Book of Knots fame. I am currently reading it. Ashley sailed as crew on a whaling barque and his book gives an excellent perspective of life on a traditional wooden whaling ship. He covers the history and the techniques and goes into detail on the equipment and the rig. There is a great deal he has to say about the whale boats. His understanding of the subject and his warm personal yet precise writing style makes it a good read. Full of illustrations which include black and white reproductions of dozens of his whaling paintings ( he was also a good artist) and in addition many of his pen and ink sketches which will be familiar to any lovers of his famous book of knots.

Hi Frankie, I am like you in that I looked for a Morgan build here but there just aren't any.  I found one on another site, however, it's only partially built, and the guy quit posting in '06.  His detail was outstanding though, so I am following some of his pictures.  I don't care for their format though, it is difficult to follow, but the photos have been invaluable.  Thanks for the info on the books.  I'll look for them.  Welcome aboard, and thanks for following my build.  This has moved faster than I thought....at least for now.  I should be in Mystic in September to see her.  I have been following the refurbishing on the website and almost got to go to the re-launch, but my RV trailer was delayed from the factory.

Jersey that's a good question.  Could be the general stigma from all the save the whales campaigns I remember growing up.  Could also be that she's not a war ship or a pretty ship with lots of sails.  That is something to think about.

Great work Tex she's looking great!  The planking looks awesome.

Hi Dan, thanks for the cudos! I don't understand the lack of modeling the Morgan either. It's a working boat with a lot of intersting things going on with the main deck. Lot's of furniture and room for great details. I would think that with the information and the fact that you can go on board to answer any question you could have would make this an interesting build. I did hear something one time when I was aboard her, that the whalers had to anchor about a mile offshore when coming into a port....reason they smelled really bad, and the locals didn't want to smell it in their port. I don't know what a dead whale smelled like, but can only imagine. Wonder what the ladies thought about the sailors????

Hey John------HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! :champagne-popping-smiley-emotic

I hear what Daniel is saying about the whaling thing.  But this is our history --- to some their heritage.  And you don't re-write that.

She's not pretty?????  Function dictates form.  Hell, she's gorgeous for a vessel that sails around the world chasing larger than life prey.  The A-10 Warthog is no beauty queen either --- until one comes over and blows up an enemy tank.

Dead whales do stink though.  Too bad they didn't have Fabreeze dispensers back in the 19th century.

John -

Ships like the Morgan are a bit of a challenge - to get all of the fiddly deck pieces (rendering oven, cutting in stage etc) right can take quite a bit of time.  Also, there are no cannon, and war ships seem to be a prefered subject for many model builders.  As I get more experience, the Morgan is on my list of subjects matter - I think it is a cool looking ship, and like many have been onboard many times over the years.

BTW - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thanks Augie, I'm not sure if Febreeze would be strong enough!! Yeah, not the prettiest ship around, but not bad for a "working girl". Hopefully I can replicate some of the clutter on the deck.
