Corsair by DCIronfist - FINISHED - OcCre - 1:80 scale (First wooden ship build)

Recommended Posts

Ok sorry for the delays....you know life and all that lol........so I have been doing some things lately......post-3113-0-92395100-1392421807_thumb.jpgpost-3113-0-77273500-1392421833_thumb.jpg

I will admit this seems like put one board on walk away(sometimes for the day lol) and not going as smooth as I would like with each board.

Hi David. The second planking looks good! But just like Sjors told me on my log don't put those planks with force on the place. let them go they own way, believe me it much more easier. What kind of glue you are using? If a typical glue for wood (most of the time its a white color) watch out to don't put him too much other wise it will come out and stay on planks (just like on my build it was disaster with putting a varnish on it. I`ve solve the problem but it was a LOT of sanding and you don't want to go there), or right after setting the planks clean it with a bit wet material (like piece of cloth). And good luck with the rest i will gladly follow your next steps :D.

Whew well I now have my second plank layers on, not sanded yet and my crew keeps griping about the flaws so I may have to add plank for walking lol...post-3113-0-34189300-1393276696_thumb.jpgpost-3113-0-66122600-1393276717_thumb.jpg

I still feel that I should work on a gaps but may see what they look like after sanding in a few days.....Thanks for checking in :) :) :)

Hi David. I just read your post and seen that you have a problem with gaps. There is an easy solution (thanks to Sjors again :P). Put to the gap an glue (normal glue for wood) and than sand over it (the glue must be fresh still). What you will get is that the dust will stay on glue so the gap will not be visible anymore. I did it for my self and it works perfect :D. Only think is that be careful to not overdose glue and try to keep the wooden planks clean from it. The reason is that glue will sink to the wood and by putting varnish on planks you will see little difference in the structure so be careful! (I fix my problem by sanding those places but its a hell out of work). Good luck hope I help a bit.

THe planking looks good from a normal distance. The glue and sandust fix works quite well for filling and hiding those small gaps!

So I sanded and smoothed. I did have a bit of a problem on the one side so that will just have to be where the ship took damage ramming another during battle

So I think I am moving forward......and then I snap the two pieces for rubbing strakes that go on next and have no spares so I am now glueing them back together and hoping they work lol....

Also a few places the glue didn't take and the boards are a bit spongy will the stain hold them on or shall I just ignore it?

On the spongy boards, regular old stain won't hold them.  But if you are planning to overcoat the stain with some flat polyurethane you may get some strength from that.

Very nicely done!

I had a crew once,  but they kept complaining so I had them walk the plank - then I turned around one day and realized it was just me - all by my little lonesome.   Gotta find me a new crew!

Ok been doing my fiddly bits as Sjors calls them.........I just figured out that I have gotten myself into a sanding hobby that I occasionally get to add pieces to the whole lol

I've put the rubbing strakes on and most of the limber boards I had a problem lining up one of the boards so modifying took some time but I am pleased with the results :) :) :)post-3113-0-86437900-1394840793_thumb.jpgpost-3113-0-26610400-1394840823_thumb.jpgpost-3113-0-64636300-1394840853_thumb.jpg

And the rear rubbing strakes gave me many problems getting it to stay layed down and you can see the upper one creeped away a bit...this took me multiple attempts so it is what it is ....post-3113-0-23928600-1394841000_thumb.jpg

The other limber boards I hope to put on Sunday then some boards around the galley then according to the directions stain so that means wait for better weather since that will be done outside. Guess I will work on some deck swag lol...

Got some wood put on and now directions state to stain (better weather needed)post-3113-0-97215000-1396644384_thumb.jpgpost-3113-0-94770700-1396644411_thumb.jpg

The upper stern finial was quite the problem child for me....I must have reglued it 4 times and glued myself to the ship at least 3 lol

Progress!!!!! Looking good David, was beginning to think you fell into that same pit i did of too much real life and not enough shipyard time. as for staining, just remember if you still have to glue anything to the hull, it wont stick if you have it stained. forces you to sand through the stain where the parts meet, and often times you have to pin the parts as well in order to get a bond.

Thanks Sjors

Yeah Robbyn I've been a bit tied up and may be away again when it gets warm enough to dig and plant.  I am determined to finish this one day but am not in a super hurry to do so. I just take it as it comes. I find when I force things more damage than good. Some out of it lol. :) :) :)

  • 2 months later...

I have attached pin racks and painted a few parts but really have not done a whole lot lately. I did cut the 5 mm spaces and drilled the hole for the rudder, that was a bit nerve wracking....spend time trying to make the ship nice and now punch holes in it lol. Well off to put more together  :D  :D  :D
