Corsair by DCIronfist - FINISHED - OcCre - 1:80 scale (First wooden ship build)

Hi David ,

Welcome back !

If it works for you to drone the nails into the wood, then it is ok.

Great tip from Augie !

It looks funny when you are finishing the hull and there are a few clothespins left  :D  :D

And take your time with reading all those logs….See you in a few months  :P

Glad you are all settled in David, and the clamps are quite ingeious...vaseline should work as Augie suggested, but I wonder if the oils might discolor the wood in any way???? I guess I would just suggest wiping away excess glue with a damp cloth and then there shouldn't be a problem.....

Ok so I thought I would show my new work area (even though its pretty similar to the old one lol)

And I was thinking one wall hunter green (the one I face) and the others a lighter either sea pearl or perhaps sage)

Just keeping everyone updated lol not relevant but that does not matter lol :) :) :)

So it seems to have worked out and no more nails will be used however, I do seem so have asymmetric lines so will wood filling and sanding get both sides to look similar? I think I like the gradual bend( on the left side of the last picture) better so will try to get the other side to match after finishing the first plank layer.

As this is a first planking, do what you can filler/sanding wise to even things out.  Just use care with the sanding ---it's pretty easy to go right through the planking at the higher spots if you get too 'enthusiastic'.

Planking is looking good, David  :)

I would echo Augie's excellent advice, some filler and careful sanding should take care of any bumps.

May I also suggest some additional fairing of the remaining portion of the 3rd bulkhead? This should allow the planks in that area to have a smoother curve.

I agree with Augie and Aldo. That 3rd bulkhead seems to be a bit high and is causing a peak in the contour as she rounds in toward the stem, which appears to be worsening towards the keel. I had one side of my Swift build that had a similar problem. Sanding and filler can make a big difference, before you second plank. That overhead photo really shows the contour of the planking and other then the 3rd bulkhead the rest of her looks perfect.

I found that in many ways the fairing process is as important, if not more so, then the planking and fairing and shimming can be done while planking as Aldo suggests. The main thing is, are you having FUN, If so then you doing it right.

Keep on Planking

Hi David, this is looking good for a first build. A late welcoome to this forum and all the help it will provide. I too am into my first wood build and if it wasn't for the gang here I probably wouldn't have even attempted it, much less be as far as I am into my build now. It's a great group, enjoy.....

Oh darn Augie I thought I had some real talent lol....actually I tear more curtains down at fires then worry about what they match to lol

Welcome to my little dock John, the people here have treated me very well and I have some pictures coming tomorrow...

I got a good part of the first layer of planks down so its on to fill and sand.......I may wait to sand until the weather cools off a tad :) :) :)

Ok here's where I ask for more advice.............

Per instructions I am supposed to apply the keel( little piece of wood on bottom of ship) after the second planking is done. I am wondering if logically I should apply the keel then my second plank layers can line right up to it, instead of any gaps that could arise.

Any comments, advice, even rude remarks would be welcome :) :) :) Thanks

Actually David, if you check my log you can see how I attached the stem/keel/sternpost before second planking and then using an exacto and formed a small psuedo-rabbet along the keel line which was used to fit the second planking. This gave a nice tight bearding line and I was very happy with the results.

Looks like you have a bunch of sanding ahead.
