And let the planking commence!

I got home from work this evening and dove right in to the last of the sub planking. I also got two coats of wipe on poly on the ladder.

I will let that dry real good over night and get it installed in the morning.

That's it for tonight.

I love seeing you back at it. Do you find the black clips modified like that work? When I did it I felt that some of them didn’t really clamp down hard to stay secure because the silver wire part kept the black clip slightly open. If that makes sense.

it’s looking really nice though

Thanks for all the likes. I have not had any problems with the clip staying open. Are you sure you have the third handle fully inserted into the clip?

A lot of great tweaks on this build.   I also note you had the foresight to build in the interior details on the lower deck as you go.   I'll never understand why the AL instructions for this kit have you install details later.   It makes it sooo much harder!

Thanks for the kind words Justin. However....................

After three courses of planking I noticed a fairing issue that was not apparent until I got above the main deck level.

So I thought I could try to fair the ribs from this point up or remove the planking and do it properly.. I went with the latter option. That is when disaster struck.

OOUCH.

I think it will be ok needless to say I am going to let this set up for a good bit before any fairing though. On the bright side...

20200208_103014.thumb.jpg.a92ba44fd7acede46613871b9a489a43.jpg

I did get the planking off in one piece and should be able to reuse it.

This is what I get for jumping out of bed and diving right in. LOL

Oh dear!   Yes, those frames are delicate, but thankfully, easily mended!  I actually didn't fair this one too much, partly for this reason but also it just really didn't seem necessary.

I did not fair anything up to this point either and everything was nice and straight But those first few planks above the main deck began to get real curvy.

With the judicious use of shims and sanding boards I was able to get everything faired in.

20200208_143324.thumb.jpg.551688b3d34fd0fdcb7a235d7690f3bf.jpg

and in between sanding and waiting for the glue to dry on the shims I managed to get the upper ladder installed.

and get started on the upper capstan.

So after a few hours work I was right back to where I was when I got up this morning .

Tomorrow is my day for playing poker while the Admiral is at the Renaissance Festival.

Till next time.

Many thanks for all the likes. Even with my trip to the casino I managed to get a little bit done today. First of all one of the scuppers wound up partially below deck level. 20200209_092004.thumb.jpg.248a2b55eef4713c5e14a56518599b34.jpg

So I had to raise it up a little. I enlarged the slot upwards then scabbed in a very small piece of planking on the bottom of the slot.

20200209_092403.thumb.jpg.046c1a86373280907d0ab55e4006bb57.jpg

Like it never happened. Then I continued with the planking. Getting enough done to rough in the gun ports.

For some reason the camera makes them look crooked but they really are straight as all get out. If I had it to do over again I would start with the inside planking first. Because of the taper of the tops of the ribs I have a good bit of fairing to do on the gun port frames. But that will have to wait till tomorrow.

I managed a little progress over the last couple of evenings anyway.

Once I completed the planking up to the top of the frames then it was time to cut the arc along the top of the gunwales. I have agonized over this step from the beginning. It just seemed to me that this could turn into an excellent opportunity for a major misstep. The instruction simply say draw and arc connecting the tops of the frames and cut it out. Easy right, not for me. I tried every pot lid in the kitchen and anything else that was round but found nothing the right radius. I finally came up with a plan though. After completing the inside planking up passed the gunwales I drilled some small holes through the planking at the top of each frame.

20200211_174906.thumb.jpg.7fb5cb99eeaac4e673f4d98355ee0078.jpg

then I inserted some stick pins in the holes.20200211_174751.thumb.jpg.d61fff031ac935250bdfa1098676b8b8.jpg

Using a thin piece of brass stock I clamped one end to the forward pin.

20200211_174730.thumb.jpg.2f1f2b2284fa9bd3b6a733402500c29f.jpg

Then pulled it up until it was in contact with all 4 pins and traced the arc onto the planks. I rough cut the inside planking leaving the line.

20200211_184553.thumb.jpg.a87852fb9a1c3ad0955cf43669f86180.jpg

Then built up the outer planking. Oh yes and in between waiting for glue to dry on the planks I did a little work on my capstan and got the gun ports cut out.20200211_190317.thumb.jpg.d0d7a1090fd8f2ec5b1df07afc1c1f63.jpg

Then I cut the gunwales down to their final shape.

I will frame in the gun ports tonight and start the final sanding of the planking in prep for the second layer.

I am not sure yet. I was going to wait and see how cramped it is in there once I get all the cannon rigging done.

Oh man.... This is dead. Im about to start this one as my first and found this. So far its great hope you come back and finish.

It's a pity, let's hope that the good work done so far continues, it's fantastic.

I also have it and I do not want to take long to start it and all this information is magnificent.

Hopefully it will be encouraged again to continue.

Greetings

Gus

I only write here so as not to lose the thread as a reference for my construction.

It is a pity that Osmosis does not continue its great work.

Greetings
