HMBV Granado by Vane - Caldercraft - Scale 1:64

Recommended Posts

Some progress on the Granado... lower deck is planked but I am not fully happy. My pencil seem to have "bleeded" some black colour in the ends. Though I could scrap it afterwards but its everywhere.

Next problem... the stickers for decoration.. not really sure why they decided to construct it this way. You are suppose to paint the "sticking area" with blue and THEN put some PVA on it and stick it to the surface.

Havent fullyt decided yet but I will probably just build a small door from scrap and noty have any decoration at all. What do you think?

Hey Vane.  I recognize that my Granado is not an exemplary piece of work, but I thought I would chime in with my "lessons learned.  Like you, I also did as the directions indicated.  However, in order to get an even coating of blue on the stickers (or decals), I had to do more than one coat of paint.  It made the decals much less striking (as in it decreased the contrast of the black and blue), but in the end it seemed to work in a subtle fashion.  I should note that once I got the decals glued in place, I put a light coat of poly over them. I stained the dividers of the quarterdeck panels with dark walnut stain as well.  With respect to the deck and the pencil bleed, I wonder if a coat of poly will help blend the appearance a little?

Time to finalize the hull of my Granado that has been sitting to long on the shelf.

Rails, deckplanking and some details done.

Did you consider painting the details onto the bulkhead rather than using the stickers?  Might be worth a try with nothing to lose and could give a much more pleasing result, I suspect that these should really be yellow ochre rather than black, with some light/dark highlights to give some depth.

Cheers,

Jason

I given up on the sticker... I will definitely put a door there and I might give painting a try but otherwise I will just leave it blue. At the moment i have other things to paint but not sure what colours I will use... Just primed it.

By the way... I ran into some problems and found the solution in your buildlog of Jason. You are supposed to use brass profiles for the raildetails... but Caldercraft put the wrong ones in my kit (profile 2 instead of 1). So I decided to create my own with wood instead by scraping. So I design my own tool and it worked!

Hey Vane!  How on earth did you get two figureheads?  Were they just in the box?!?  I think you made the right call to make your own rail instead of using the brass provided in the kit.  In my case, getting the brass to shape to the hull and adhere with CA was a huge challenge.

I bought the kit several years ago but I have a slight memory of ordering extra parts. It might have been that i thought it was i some kind of upgrade, but it was just a "replacement".

I probably have no use for the other one but I can play around with the colours and see what style i prefer. These whitemetal parts are kind of low quality but 3D printing and  resin wasnt used when the kit was developed.

I really think Caldercraft should revisit their old kits and improve them. 20 years ago they was top of the line but there has been zero development since then and other manufacturers are much more interesting nowadays.

Hopefully i will managed to attack the rails before my xmas holiday and I show you some photos. Now it start to look like a ship at least.

There has been some progress but I have not been doing any updates... the Rudder is in place and I been working the stern.  Came up with my own colours since I didnt like the instructions. As I understand they dont know how it was painted anyway.

After being used to Vanguards models i had to struggle to get everything in place. Alot of precut parts but nothing fits so you had to do alot of adjustments.

Rail and stern looks great!!  Nice work.  I see you put the lids on your sweep ports too!
