This is going to be a really handsome model Rob. You've really captured the massive grace of the ship.

Tony Hunt when you describe "GLORY of the SEAS" as massive grace you are really capturing one of the most defining characteristics of Donald McKay's vessels. They were huge in comparison to their contemporaries. Yet as you so astutely pointed out, while these were enormous Ships, they were incredibly graceful and beautifully finished too. Many contemporary newspaper accounts describe that whenever Glory sailed into Port she was one of the most popular Clippers to be seen. Rob and Vladimir are both being very faithful to McKay's longest lived final Clipper.

Indeed…….   McKay envisioned large cargo carriers.   Designed to endure the brutal lower latitudes and their huge waves.  That is the one real reason he built the leviathan Great Republic.   The roaring 40’s were the most brutal of passages and the trip from there to Australia was the worst.  His ships were designed for such passages.   Hence their strength and size.

Where is this guy? Must have gotten left in the sawdust? I'm seeing a lot of attention to detail and incredible industry! Thanks for the ride!

Thanks Tom.   I’m surely tentative to details, but my use of material to create said is crude at best.   I’ll use any thing to get-er done.    Again,  thanks

Rob, I hope you don't mind but I recently discovered a blast from the past. This sketch was taped to a light board my wife bought for me 12 years ago, when I first embarked on my long journey to uncover the genuine appearance of "GLORY of the SEAS."

This was when I hadn't yet discovered that, as originally launched, her Mizzen Skysail just barely went above the Main's Royal Yard. It's also years before even a blurry image of San Pedro became available.

Still overall, it reveals the mostly accurate direction I was being led to interpret her appearance based on other photos in Mike's first book.

Wonderful work....even without all the data.

Thanks for posting.

I had a dentist apt yesterday so I didn't work on Glory.......I'll have updates tonight.

Rob, oh my God, your Grecian Goddess 'Athene' Figurehead looks simply gorgeous! When I told my wife that she's just under an inch tall she said "oh, wow!'

It's also thrilling to see the graceful McKay reverse "S" curve that we discussed now realized in three dimensions. I love too the little highlights of gold which subtly emphasize the graceful folds of her gown. Now this is a worthy representative of "GLORY of the SEAS!"

Rich, I am so glad that you like the model and how it’s coming out I’m glad I can keep it close to the original, it’s been hard, but I think it’s looking pretty good.  thank you for your confidence and your compliments.

Rob, your gratitude while welcome is misdirected. You left poor Vladimir out in the cold, like a forlorn wet puppy in the rain, while sending appropriate acknowledgement of his rightly correct observations to me, who was probably slumbering at the time he replied and certainly don't deserve to steal his thunder...even as lightly as it may have clapped ;-)

Having said that, Vlad of course is right, you consistently do beautiful work. Oh in the future, you might want to look for the letter "V" which is how Vlad usually finishes his sentences.

Rich and Vlad....I see the confusion.  Rich I was commenting to your post #1486  NOT Vlad's post #1487.  Which he posted over 7 hours later.  I didn't even see that post when I posted my update.  I just threw up my update and then turned off the light and went to bed.

If I had seen Vlad's post, I would have surely commented and thanked him and even commented on his own magnificent build.

I'm not so old that I can't track a simple build log thread....😎.  I might be going deaf...but not blind.

I hope to spend some time working the anchor quick release mechanism(which is actually undefined and void from any plan), so I will use photographic evidence (and lack of),  to build the most logical design.  Here is where artistic license comes in.

I think the only detail I don't pay close attention to is when my wife cuts her hair.

Sorry for the confusion and that you had to find humor in an a supposed oversight.

And I did check out your build, (I check it probably 10 times a day), you are making great progress and your trim work is spot on.  Are you *scraping* the wood with a tool?

Using tooling steel, I made all the scrapers I needed.   Just way to small to find any generic stuff.

I have another approach I will be doing to form the house moldings and the inset trim.  The aft poop railing will be a trick and will need special math to make....along with a great deal of paying attention to details of its fit/form and function.

Rob, as my slow efforts, did I mention slow? to finally capture the true lines of "GLORY of the SEAS" in painstakingly accurate to all specific measurements we have double verified (actually I think I'm erasing more than sketching, I've redrawn her sheerline three times now) it now looks to me like the line of the Poop Deck Rail aligns equally with that of the Rear Carriage House. That house is 8' tall. Knock off 3 1/2" for being set below deck and that leaves 7' 8 1/2" to project above the Poop Deck. It is set at the height of the main bulkhead. I don't have enough time to calculate specifics but the idea is we should be able to get very close to the actual rail height.

Using tooling steel, I made all the scrapers I needed.   Just way to small to find any generic stuff.

Rob

Rob, sometimes writing is not perfect thing for communication specifically if one is not extremly cautious when putting words - myself i mean. I didnt find humor in oversight but in Rich way of using words and commenting ... ( in an easy humorous tone I suspect.)....no offence meant. V.
