This kind of work takes time since making and blackening eye bolts takes time. Vlad Vladimir, actually Glory did in fact originally carry a full set of Stuns'ls. By 1877 when Rob is modeling her, apparently those booms had been removed. Sometime prior to her 1877 San Fran image she relinquished her stunn sail booms. Probably because she became a West coast carrier, rarely going far South and not rounding the Horn any more. Accommodating doldrums was no longer going to be a burden for her. The true reason stun sails are carried. Honestly, I’ve spent more time lately, planning the addition of the futtock shrouds and their dead eyes to actually be doing any work on Glory. I did add the bell and bell arm to the forecastle leading edge. Rob Rob i look fwd much to see your style in place. with all that paper sails etc. i will not hesitate to ask for advice or help if needed sure. As for my progress atm im enormously enthusiastic as im doing soemthing new. and more importantly after rigging 1:24 cutty, i was soldering everything and i dont need so far - so im enjoying it so far. im far from rigging, but following Eds gigantic show helps as well as flying fish rigging masting plans i observe. everything is explained there. i started untypically with yards than making masts and probably next winter rigging. but with me it is - one never knows :))) so with grain of salt but even installing wholebowsprit itself changed her enormously. did i mention im not going with composite masting? i take hat off of sou guys but i am not good at it - never made one . thats why. i dont wsnt to spoil it all. when i see your masts i just clap hands with outcome and effort that was made. v. My conclusion by totalling up combined keel dimensions was to add 9'5" to your mast heights, to account for these massive spars being mounted onto Glory's substantial internal backbone. Measure from the very bottom of the keel of your vessel. That's for lower masts only. All other masts above the lowest, would exactly follow the published list. To pipe in....along with published numbers...I always use calipers or drafting dividers to cross reference these numbers with actual photographs. Dead reckoning via direct measurements of photographs....either validates or causes you to remeasure. Like any good carpenter....measure twice(5 times if necessary), cut once. If I can reverse engineer the entire hull from knowing the actual length of the figurehead....I can do the same with the masts and yards. They show the Howes double topsail design. Glory was slightly modified from the image with the banded support arm. Though i dont intend to change topsail mounts at this point - it was tremendous work. im glad topgallant is different but wioll be more and more iron work... i should seek for some books of masting and rigging - i note there will always be some variations even with bands on yards... as looking at flying fish design plan i have. so more headache. 😕 . i assume there will be slight innacuracy in a way here and there with little details but i dont consider it fatal. even some captains might have done some rigging adjustments. though essentials are functional structures that are always given. BANYAN Posted January 21, 2022 Share #2340 Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) Vlad, may have something to do with the size of the spars, In my Victoria build, the yards used a patent truss for the lower yard, an iron parrel for the topsail yard, and rope parrels for the topgallant and royal yards - confirmed in the Rigging Warrant. The upper mast (top, topgallant and royal) was a single stick so the upper parts were relatively quite thin and fragile, and it appears the royals were rarely used. Rope will have been lighter and kinder to the masts as you have surmised - horses for courses (parrels for masts). cheers Pat Edited January 21, 2022 by BANYAN p.s. GS Nares in his book 'Seamanship' (1868) also recognises the various options including rope or iron parrels (iron being iron brackets on a wooden support bolter to the yard).
