I can jump on those working. from the book photos with dancing around them, i noticed glass on lower side of skylights and i dont see that on pics... am i false ? looking fwd to wheelhouse V. It was taken from a pdf file that eminent author Michael Mjelde shared with me in a recent email. While I can't post pdf files, I can take pictures from my laptop screen, which converts them to shareable jpg files. Should you like a pdf file, just give me your email & I can do that for you. Oh, I almost forgot, thank you for the kind compliment on my artwork. I am racing to keep up with the breakneck pace of Rob & Vladimir in their reconstruction modeling process. Vladimir, you and Rob both are making remarkable progress in both of your wonderful Glory models. As for the skylights, I agree with your observation that glass was inset and mounted beneath. Above the glass, from what I can tell, were natural wooden slats mounted in such a way, like Venetian Blinds which slightly overlap, they could close completely, in bad weather to protect fragile glass beneath and open fully to allow light for below in more clear weather. I'm fascinated by that. Hubble has given us incredibly detailed images which give us a greater understanding of how unbelievably vast our Universe truly is. Yes the wonders of the Universe are vast and God in His majesty has blessed us with so many heavenly wonders to look at through our telescopes. I'm building a platform from a used electric wheelchair for my large (5") binoculars. So you can move about the drive putting yourself in good view of the sky and be able to have great rotational and directional control. Astronomy is another of my passions and creating instruments to navigate the sky is among them. The newly on coming rain does put a damper on my astronomy hobby, but work in the shop goes on. When it gets too cold i usually throw in the towel. I truly hope to be back at Glory very soon. While there are some useful images of that structure, what impressed me more was this image of the Packard's Rear House. This beautiful scene shows her massive sculptured corner bracket as well as the elegant touches all along the front and sides. It's #20 of 100 exclusively signed by the author. A nice bonus surprise was a personal letter of gratitude from him to the previous owner who apparently made a lot of contributions to his efforts, in the form of rare photos. Without which, the author himself admitted his book would have been pretty thin! Considering the Packard was a Maine Downeast vessel built 20 years after Glory, it's not much of a stretch to consider McKay's vessel was a precursor to that style of vessel. Much like his "Great Republic" with her 4th "Jigger Mast" led the way to the massive steel 4 masted Barques just a few short years later. McKay was described as a restless innovator, constantly striving to reach his vision of maritime perfection with every new vessel he built. While including such fine touches helps to establish how ornate these ships truly were, if the added details are too large, it throws everything else off. I've had this conversation for years...that is why I originally made my first Glory of the Seas from a heavily modified Cutty Sark hull. Good questions, but there will most likely never be any large scale models of any McKay ships. Too expensive to create. So it's left up to us boys to create our own. Its large enough to command presence, but small enough that small minor details such as what is being discussed can be added. Short of completely mimicking photographs such as this for Glory of the Seas. Artistic license, coupled with period practice, should deliver the most probable accurate model. I'm sure it is not beyond the stretch of the imagination that these later models(designs), took some of their own details and practices from models that preceded them. Such as Glory of the Seas. She was in her heyday when the Packard was laid down. This must be when she was much older....cuz as originally designed(In 1851), she did not have double topsails, nor sky sails on her fore and mizzen masts. Sweet painting though. Sweet painting though. Rob Rob, "Flying Cloud" was 20 years old by the time this gorgeous painting of her was done. By then she was under British ownership, her lofty 3 skysail rig has been greatly cut down and her Hull is a lovely shade of green. Regardless, she still retains her beautiful trumpet bearing angel, this time accurately portrayed mounted on her gold embellished carved cutwater just below her carved, gilded naval hoods. Ironically, today there is not one model of "Flying Cloud" that accurately replicates these intricate features. Instead, they just portray a bare stem with the angel figurehead awkwardly tacked on underneath her bowsprit. Even the three quarter scale reproduction, built in Nova Scotia, berthed in Boston in the '70s followed that exact practice . I know, because I saw her there in the early '70s. It's just one of many reasons why I consider our painstaking recreation work on Glory so profound. To me, she's the "Rosetta Stone" of Donald McKay's Clippers. Rob Rob, actually for a cheap model under $3.00 in the 60s, Revell's "Flying Cloud" built into a decent model which at least replicated her lofty rig fairly decently. Her small scale also enabled her to be easily displayed anywhere. However, they made the right decision modeling "Cutty Sark" in the larger scale for accuracy. Rob Rob, I think that's also why author Michael Mjelde has mentioned the idea of doing an updated article on "GLORY of the SEAS" for publication in Nautical Research Journal. We might all want to decide how we would describe this painstaking recreation journey of ours in a manageable way to share with the good folks at NRG. I'll finish up the forward skylight tonight and drill out the mizzen mast hole and probably glue the carriage/helm house down too. That has to be done before I can secure the carriage house aft ladders and gratings can be mounted. But before all that I must make then drill and place the bumpkins. Gotta have a clean deck to do this safely.
