One thing I noticed is that the stairs top step doesn't go to the top the the deck on the model. But in the picture up above they seem to go all the way to the top. Which is correct? In the busy image of Glory's main deck undergoing conversion to being a factory vessel, it's clear that, while the highest step is just below, both rungs of Starboard steps actually attach to the upper poop deck itself. I guess a downside to having so much photographic, verifiable evidence available is that intrepid modelers like Rob and Vladimir are open to stricter scrutiny than ever before. Dowmer...in this image you can see the step clearly does not go to the top. They use the poop deck as the last step. A natural progression. Still I can identify loads of errors and miss steps. One is that I tried and tried to make the top stanchions thinner and more spindly, but they all kept breaking or separating. Turning them that thin was very problematic......so I had to settle on making them a bit thicker then I wanted to...just to keep them uniform and intact. A necessary compromise. I'm sure I'll have to make other compromises as I progress. This scale does present its problems. I can only defer to what other shipwrights did during the period. When building my steps I focused on the step itself and gave no thought to the risers on either side. Packard Rob Rob, I don't think anyone is trying to fault you. It's more about reassuring observers that the actual vessel is correct vs a modeler's efforts to duplicate it. Besides that though, did you ever think, when you began this project over a year ago now, that anyone would be so interested that they would be questioning ladder risers? For my education, re the dental tools you show in a post on the previous page (laying on the deck houses) - are they rounded picks or scrapers? I had an excellent double ended scraper tool (probably not the right name - but had paddle ends rather than points and were angled and seemed to have a sharp and a dull edge), but it broke under my over enthusiastic use . As far I can recall this long house was 54' long × 24' wide and 8'3" high. From the few pictures available, this structure was far more plain than the more ornate Carriage House. There were similar embellishments between the upper windows but the lower section was unadorned. The same roof treatment is apparent as the Rear House. The doors definitely appear to be all sliders. But I think Model Shipways produces scored deck sheets that are easily used for this purpose. I double checked the stats in the MacLean article. The long house was indeed 18' wide, not 24'. The other two dimensions 54' long × 8'3" high I remembered correctly. V. Vladimir, I believe those horizontal bars function as reinforcements for the long narrow house as well as being major supports for the sculptured roof which would mount above them.
