Hi Thomas, how did you make the white stripes on the rails on the bow? It's been a long time, I hope you remember :) By the way, the ship's boats look great!

That’s ok I still remember! I just wish I had a new cool technique to share, but I just hand painted them.
I painted all the black first. Then I went back and painted the white stripes. This way allowed me paint from the sides and have a little touch up in some of the black areas.

I just remember something!! At the hobby stores you can get polystyrene strips and sheets. They are extremely flexible and come in a ton of different sizes and they are already white. I’ve used them mostly to make cooling fins for my planes!IMG_3425.thumb.jpeg.e4284c690ee8e223a0eb9573bf3a0132.jpeg

Thanks a lot Thomas, I make them from brass wire. I was just wondering how you did it. I tried to paint them like you did but I didn't succeed. You have a scale modeling background so you are much better at painting than I am.

The styrene solution is the one employed in the Hunt practicum. It's a fairly easy material to work with and may have been an easier route for you to take, Mustafa.

But yours is definitely an out of the box  alternative solution.

And, the more I look at Unegawahya's work, the more I'm impressed.

Cheers

That gangway board carving is gorgeous! You mentioned you used a "curved scraping tool." can you show us a picture of what it looks like?

This is what I’ve been using. I’ve had it so long that I had to hone the blades. I’ve been carefully using it to gently scrape away the borders in the carving on the laser cut supplied parts.

That tool looks like it's from a tool set for sculpting clay. Nice job repurposing it.

I’ve finally finished stitching my hammock netting on! IMG_9007.thumb.jpeg.4ce219da82cd33d458fa1cecd888de5e.jpegIMG_9008.thumb.jpeg.01ba046ee0d1dbeee9e0df3c5e32e46c.jpegI’ve started carefully scratching out the background on my gangway boards. I’m using a curved scraping tool that I’ve had for long enough that I don’t even remember where I got it.IMG_9009.thumb.jpeg.608c2adb845d6d6fa6ff9bf838be8114.jpeg

I don't have the talent or patience to do that. Congratulations.

I believe that’s where I got it! I just don’t remember.

My fist two gangway boars are installed and I’ve mapped out where my sea steps are going to be located.IMG_9029.thumb.jpeg.6d07296770ed69b62e2b1b316e9a915d.jpegAfter doing some research, it seems that when the bulwarks on the waste where removed it looks like the placement of the sea stairs where changed and one was removed. IMG_9021.thumb.png.76ef2845656762a264509f74d48e9523.pngI’m borrowing mtbediz’s method for making the sea stairs and made a jig for the top 7 for each side. My first one is done. Now I have 19 more to make.IMG_9032.thumb.jpeg.b0228a6f6c309ed34f592313c7fa931e.jpegIMG_9031.thumb.jpeg.6344a18b6642d87f80f7bbfabfb2014e.jpeg

For the sake of not taking up too much more space on Mtbediz,s page I’ll post this to my page!

From what I’ve been able to find from the Constitution’s FB page, it looks like the fore tack boomkins were removed sometime before 2011 and still not present today.IMG_9089.thumb.jpeg.b8fed06a4c9325bc6aad1abf2b927303.jpegI also ford a link on the Constitution Museum’s website from Nelson’s Navy describing the use of the fore tack boomkins in the era she was built.

So it leaves me with the decision of do I leave them off because they weren’t there in 2015 or do I just go ahead and put them on? Because if I want to do the full rigging I’ll need them!

Posted

If you are not going to make full rigging, you will not need boomkins. If you decide to make a limited rigging, you will not need them either. By limited rigging, I mean making the masts and standing and running rigging, but not adding sails. In the meantime, please feel free to share anything on my page.
