Sanson by Paul Jarman - FINISHED - Artesania Latina

Recommended Posts

My next build will be this kit from AL. This a fairly typical AL kit. A mixture of very high quality parts, and some decent quality. Have started with the framework. instructions are good not brilliant. good photo instruction very little written instructions. Biggest problem I had is the sheet with the part numbers. Only two sheets where numbered. Worst of all the sheet with the bulkheads had no numbers at all. Seeing as one bulkhead out of place could throw the whole build off, this is a rather important omission. I had to fit and refit them until I had them correctly spaced.

That aside I still enjoy building AL kits.

Nice to see Paul.

I'll watch with interest.

My Sanson is about 1/2 complete, I was initially not very happy with my efforts, so stripped most of it back and re-built.

(I'll have another look at this after I complete my Fulgaro build.)

Cheers....HOF.

Up to the planking. Unfortunately the piece that had to bend round the stern snapped. It bent fine when it was soaked and seemed to fit well. But when I fitted it and started to pin it it snapped in three places. It did not snap straight but at diagonals. Should have got a picture to show it. It is hard to explain how bad it was. I have had to build the stern up from the broken bits and add a few bits so it is made up with 6 sections of wood. not come out to bad but not perfect. I could strip it back and start again but that is to much trouble. I am happy with it. As you can see I will be painting the model.

Hi Chap,

Had the same issue with my Stern Bulwarks.

Resorted to keeping the broken bits and used these as a template for a bit of thin Basswood.

Nice color scheme!!

Build is coming along nicely. The stern is not perfect but I can live with it. I have not double planked as the second planking was ultra thin and only used as hull colour if not painting. I have filled the hull in with a thin coat of wood filler which helps with the painting better.. Bit of touching up on the paintwork and then onto all the finer detailing.

Coming along nicely. Only downside is the ships boats. they don't ruin the model but they are not the best bit of the kit.

Nearly complete. Just the ships boats and davits to go. According to the parts list and the picture instructions the boats are wooden. They are not they are metal and don't look so good. Went to town on them with the Dremel and after a lot of sanding I should have something better to work with. Other than this stage of the kit the model has been a pleasure to build.

Bit more done. I knew I was going to have a problem with the covers as I am not good at sewing. So I devised this plan to achieve the finished look. Seems to work out fine. Once I get them tied down they will hopefully look OK. Considering how they started as metal boats I think they look OK.

Sanson completed. Considering how the ships boats started out I am happy with them. Only problem I had was having to tie the tiny blocks and set them in place correctly. They are not great, but not to bad and I can live with how they turned out.

Its why I would struggle with a sailing ship, to much rigging and to many blocks to tie off.

I made the coils up by pushing them into blu tack. once they where formed I brushed them liberally with diluted crystal clear. this was so much easier to do and once lifted off they leave the indentation of the coil so it is easy to make them the same size.
