Hi all

My name is Phil from Perth, Western Australia

Thanks for the add

I started my trade as a Shipwright in 1978 but have been out of the trade for 30 years

I've only recently shown interest in building wooden model ship kits in the last 5 years

Hopefully I can share some pictures of my builds and progress builds

That'd be great, Phil. Have you decided on a kit to start with? With your experience you ought to do well.

When you begin, make sure you start a build log. Check out these instructions,

and note that the build log section is divided up by periods, starting with "up to and Including 1500 AD" and going forward from there. So figure out which period is right for you and put your log there.

Where in Perth do you live? I grew up in Attadale but haven't lived in WA for yonks. Say hello to the Swan River for me, will you?

Welcome to Model Ship World Phil.  A lot of model ship builders honed their skills on Artesania Latina kits.  I look forward to seeing your pictures.

I'm pretty sure that when I was a kid in a youth orchestra we went to Bridgetown as part of a concert tour and we all got billeted overnight by local families - I ended up being billeted at the pub (which was a bit of surprise). I can date it pretty well, because we met a local girl called Rita and Sergeant Pepper's had just come out, so we called her "lovely Rita". Not sure if she got the reference . . .

thanks everyone for your replies

I currently work away but bring my ship building with me to a certain degree

Something to do to pass the time

However my work bench is a rather crude set up, it gets the job done

Any large volumes of painting though has to be done back home, particularly air brushing

Looking through the galleries , there is fantastic work with a lot of time and dedication

Welcome Phil.  Many of us bring stuff to work on when we travel or are away from home.  Starting a build log is a great way to show your work ask questions and all around participate in the community

Welcome to MSW Phil, it is a great place for support and advice. Modelling on the road? I'd like to hear how that works out.

A model shipwright and an amateur historian are heads & tails of the same coin

Mediator sloop, 1/48 - an 18th century transport scratchbuild
