Gift Ideas

Hello all!

 

Hoping to get some gift ideas for my father who just bought the Caldercraft HMS Vicotry 72:1 model kit. 
 

He did a model earlier this year but the Victory is much, much, larger. I’m hoping to get him something to help him with this. I know he has a dremel already and probably most of the basic tools. 
 

Would there be anything that’s a must-have for something like this? There’s some tool kits on Amazon but I worry about their quality. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Great idea-modelling tools!

Hard to suggest this stage. Is he new to modelling or he allready has workshop? What would be budget?

From electric tools without knowing anything-proxxon mini lathe, disk sander and bench drill.

Maybe some book with more detail drawing on Victory?

For me it's upgrade from Dremel to a decent flex shaft tool.

The situation is complicated.  As for tools, although enthusiasm often leads to wasted money as far as tools, even your father probably does not realize which tools

he needs until he needs that specific job done.

It may be wiser to get:

A gift certificate to a special tool vendor:

Lee Valey
Japan Woodworker
Lie-NielsenToolworks

 

or

A subject specific book:

The 100-Gun Ship Victory (Anatomy of the Ship)  by John McKay
The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships Hardcover   by C. Nepean Longridge

 

But for something unexpected but better than what he is likely to know about:

Japan Woodworker  #156382  1/8" double bevel Blue Steel knife

It also needs a piece of scrap leather and a fine honing compound like Flexcut Gold

Compared to Xacto type #11 blades - both will do the job,  but the knife it like having Lamborghini instead of a Ford

For me it's upgrade from Dremel to a decent flex shaft tool.

 

Good suggestion. The Dremel body is very heavy and bulky for fine, light work. The flexible drive (coupled with the mini hand tightend chuck) makes the Dremel cutter/drill/sander bit on the end so much easier to manipulate.

This is the ideal solution since your father won't know what tools he really needs until the need arises.  The suggested books do look good though as do the quality tools. A book might be a good supplementary gift though since he can read it in the 'family' areas and start 'did you know that....' conversations 🙂

I would go with the book for starters.   For a kit, next to machine tools are needed.   You might look at this article, https://thenrg.org/articles/basic-tools  and then find out what he doesn't have.
