To virtually finish the lifeboat other than painting or whatever I fitted the throles

post-3712-0-30426500-1373631683_thumb.jpg

I shaped them slightly as they had in the picture instructions

Then I made another oar in the shape I thought was right but when I looked at it I realised it needed to be made from a square section to get the shape needed so I glued 3 tongue depressors together and cut them into 3

post-3712-0-86934700-1373631787_thumb.jpg

This now gave me the shape I wanted

post-3712-0-19226400-1373631830_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-27280700-1373631842_thumb.jpg

I feel that looks so much better in shape and size

It is only fractionally shorter than the original

Looking at diagrams they seem to be the same size all the way up virtually, apart from the thickness of the blade and a section of round just above the blade

The thread has also arrived

post-3712-0-67238700-1373632016_thumb.jpg

I am a little disappointed as it is not as thick as I remember the thread I used for the Thermopylae

I will give it a try this afternoon and if it is no good I will have to see if I can find some actual carpet thread

Well this is how it is turning out

post-3712-0-63554400-1373644515_thumb.jpg

As you can see it is improving as I go

The thread really isn't thick enough and carpet thread would do the job much better but I had great difficulty finding any so I went for the upholstery thread

What I did to make it work was to twist it double with a tiny bit of glue

Carpet thread would be perfect though and I will try and get some for the upper decks

Not much of this deck is seen

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Hi Mick,

Nice oar  :D

Looks like real one!

Also nice thread and it looks good on the deck.

I will wait till the end result of that.

When it looks good, maybe I will give that a try at my next build.

Hello Mick,

Your lifeboat is looking good. She's coming along very nicely.

It's a shame the thread isn't exactly what you expected or wanted.

Maybe, instead of twisting the thread double, you might try to put a thread between the planks and add another one later.

Or is that a bad idea?

I do hope you will be able to get your hands on some carpet thread soon.

The problem is if the thread is not secure and also strong it will pull out or shred when you sand it Anja

I was going to send off for some 1mm bracelet thread as that would be great I thought

I consulted the wife to see what she though of the idea and she said 'hang on a minute'

She brought in some embroidery thread and this is how it looks

post-3712-0-91277900-1373652336_thumb.jpg

As you can see the last two are the ones with embroidery thread and it looks real good

So that may be the way to go

I would say if you had nothing that 1mm Shamballa bracelet thread should work well and is quite cheap

It's important to fill the gap as solid as you can

I remember reading a thread somewhere where a chap cut 1mm or less shims of wood and used those

That would be hard work though without specialist kit I would think

Hej Mick,

I know your ship is in a much bigger scale as mine, but as you might noticed I used “thin paper” on the Sanisima Trinidad for caulking,

Maybe you can give it a try with “thick cardboard” or “glue” it on both sides of the planks instead ?

It  might look complex to use paper or cardboard but actually (maybe after a few tries) it will probably surprise you how easy it is..

And you can sand it down as much as you want afterwards  :)

Best wishes, Theo

Ah yes Theo, I must have seen your post at some point when I was searching caulking through here

I did think about it but thread had done such a good job for me before

It is just a question of getting the right thread

Hi Bankie

OcCre are famed for having good instructions and also supposedly the most realistic models

The also now seem to be doing most or all their instructions in English

Anyway to keep you all abreast with what is happening there is so much on the TV today what with the Test, the Scottish Open golf and most importantly FISH-O-MANIA    :dancetl6:

But what am I doing

I am making oars

And do you know what else

I have the DREMEL out  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o

I won't say it's any easier, it's probably more difficult

Slip with a sander you make a bit of a mark

Slip with the Dremel and you have a tooth pick

But I am a whiz with it and it is so much quicker  :P

So production line oars for a bit, then I may do a bit of planking

I can plank while i watch the TV  B)  B)  B)

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Hello Mick,

The last two with the embroidery thread are looking good.

It makes a huge difference with the other thread.

Thank you Anja

Here is the half deck finished

post-3712-0-51857500-1373735039_thumb.jpg

I have done my best to even the caulking up but as I have said most of this deck is hidden in one way or the other

I have finished 6 oars and the rest can wait until my fingers have recovered from the cuts

post-3712-0-51386300-1373735178_thumb.jpg

As you can see the 'Hand' made ones are a lot better but they take forever and I think the others are good enough as they will be heaped in the boat

I should finish the other half deck tomorrow so it can be fitted in the hull

Then it's the more important decks that will be seen more

Right better go and change the dressings on my hands  :P

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

Mick

P.S.  Oh yes.  Question of the day.  Do you think the decks look better polished or just varnished??????????????

Yes I think that has to be the way Theo

Nothing more satisfying than working a bit of wax in to build up a lovely finish

Thank you all for your nice comments

Remember the reason I may seem speedy to some of you is that I spend around 8 hours a day on the build

I don't suppose there are many that can say that

Anyway I need a few more planks cut to finish the second half of the lower deck so back to work

Hi Mick,

Deck looks good. As to your question, my only advice would be to avoid a finish that looks too shiny. With your deck planks, you might want to consider staggering the plank endings a bit more. This "shift of the butts" is usually 3 or 4 planks (ie 3 or 4 planks between plank ends ("butts") falling on the same beam, while yours appear to be at every other plank. I know you said this deck won't be seen much, so maybe something to consider for the upper decks.

And half your luck - being able to spend 8 hrs/day in the shipyard! :D

Basically what I am doing Grant is following the instructions  :P

Thing is with the planks only being 65mm it would be tricky to lay them any differently

Plus I have always done it as I am now and it is habit

So it actually never even crossed my mind although I have read about it

I am afraid as well that I have started the middle deck the same way

Maybe the next ship

If I can afford one  :(

Deck looks great Mick,

Even when you don't see all of it, You and we know that it is there…..

Use some real beeswax ! not the syntatic stuff…….

Hi Sjors

Yes you certainly know yourself even if it's 3 layers down

Anyway the first job today was to finish off the lifeboat

post-3712-0-90397400-1373825087_thumb.jpg

It's really annoying on the photo as the paint looks nice and smooth when you pick it up and look

Almost makes we want to clean it all up and paint again but we all know how difficult that would be on something so small and delicate

Now the lower decks

I finished the planking and rubbed in some beeswax

post-3712-0-82289200-1373825226_thumb.jpg

I was amazed, there must have been some sort of tint in the wax

It didn't look like it until you rubbed it in

Anyway that will be the lower deck so it will be dark anyway

The second deck needed supports so these went on next

post-3712-0-03584800-1373825373_thumb.jpg

Simple planks glued to the frame

I then dry fitted the decks

post-3712-0-53626600-1373825432_thumb.jpg

They did not line up perfectly as you can see but slight pressure bought the hatch sides into line so they would be fine

I wanted a strip pf caulking down between the two halves of the deck

post-3712-0-64608800-1373825562_thumb.jpg

As you can see I glued a length of the thread to the edge of the deck and the first row of planks

Hopefully that should work well

So I planked the decks and rubbed in some different beeswax that I hoped had no tint in it

post-3712-0-83481500-1373825682_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-71736800-1373825688_thumb.jpg

I think they turned out quite nice

I have never been one for bright wood

I like a bit of texture to it and I think this wax gave it just enough

Two more decks to fit and then the building starts

Just remember Mick

GET IT RIGHT FIRST TIME!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mick,

You are in the next gear?

Planking of the deck looks just great.

You keep it this way?

Under deck dark and the decks above lighter?

Thank you Sjors

That is indeed how it will be

That lower deck is totally covered by upper decks so it would appear darker anyway so I will leave it so and the upper decks will be as the middle deck is

Hello Mick,

My compliments to you.

But I must say, it is hard to keep up with you animaatjes-sport-12525.gif

Both decks look great.

The lower deck has a sort of weathered look now

The middle deck just has a more solid color. Very nice.

The thread seems to work out ok.
