Hi,

My name is Dan. Greetings from Northern California. I built a lot of models when I was younger including an RC glider an RC Boat, and  HO trains but I have not built anything for years. I retired about 6 months ago, but have remained pretty busy with a job I do as a volunteer and a labor of love. I cleaned and decluttered my garage with my new-found time and energy. I almost got rid of my old workbench but could not bring myself to part with it. I cleaned it up and found a space for it.  I then had the urge to build some more models! I have tired some ships in the past, that did not go so well, so I decided to start with the Lowell Dory kit in the Model Shipways shipwright series. I have really enjoyed building it and the instructions that come with the kit are great. I found this site as I was nearing the end of the build. I am just starting the second model in the series, the Norwegian sailing Pram and have been very grateful for all of the pictures detailed information and suggestions in the build logs on the site.

Welcome to MSW, Dan.   When the Dory is finished, feel free to post some pictures of the finished model in the gallery.  And on Pram, by all means start a build log.  It's the best way to meet other builders and also get help when you need it.

Welcome aboard, Dan! As a long-time former resident of Humboldt County, I feel compelled to correct your notion of 'Northern California' -- Lafayette is definitely in what we called Southern California. Northern California ended at the Mendocino-Sonoma county line. Just kidding, of course! Well, half-way, maybe. We can accept you as an honorary NorCal resident as long as you root for the Giants and not that other California Team That Shall Not Be Named (and to head off any potential wisecracks out there, the Angels and Padres are not considered worthy enough adversaries to qualify as Teams That Shall Not Be Named). Good luck with your pram, and hopefully you'll share some pictures of it!

Thanks for all of the welcome messages! I understand that there is still a lot of California north of the Bay area,. I've been up to visit a few times and its really beautiful.  Still,  having grown up in Southern California, it's definitely different up here. I do cheer for  the Giants and also the San Jose Sharks.

Hi Dan,

Don't listen to Chris – he's not even in the state anymore! 😀  By the way, you're just down the road from me, almost literally. I'm probably less than 10 miles from you, up in Pleasant Hill.

Welcome to MSW!

Believe it or not, even here in little SC we have regional rivalries. The state is geographically divided into the Low Country, the Piedmont, and the Upstate. The Upstate, where I live, seems to be largely populated by recent arrivals from the Upper Midwest.

Hi Dan and welcome to Model Ship World.  The Lowell Dory is an excellent kit to start your journey in building wooden ship models.  The other kits in the series will help you build your skills.
