I have done one 3D drawing with help from a member here of a cannon barrel based on English design circa 1690.   The results were excellent and the parts that resulted were cheap.

A project to consider:

1. I stink at 3D

2. I am somewhat proficient at 2D

3. I have Caruana's book on RN ordnance which has drawings and specs for a few hundred year range

4. I would be happy to draw and provide 2D drawings of all barrel patterns and lengths up to and including the Blomefield pattern in four views at full scale.

5. I would like to work with someone who is willing to spend the time to convert these to 3D in STL or similar format that can be used by a 3D printer.

6. These drawings could then be posted as a collated collection, hopefully in the articles database here at MSW for all members to use to get barrels printed that are era and pattern specific, accurate, and inexpensive.

Please PM me if interested in working together on this.

Thanks!!!

Allan

A very nice offer, Allan.

Thanks Druxey

As with most, if not all, members here, I have gained so much knowledge from others, including you, this seems like it might be a useful way to say thanks.  I truly hope someone takes me up on this opportunity.

I made a start on the barrel and mouldings of the 1786 canon marine (Manson) ordnance, but wasn't sure how to correctly/best practice apply the rimbases and trunnions (in software, not conceptually from the pattern) so put the project on a back burner.

My software is a choice of Blender (which I am not comfortable with, though seems easy to use) or FreeCAD (which is much more opaque, but for some reason I found easier to use to sketch the dimensioned drawing and produce a closed solid which behaved well in the slicer (sans rimbases and trunnion, as noted above).

The below is the one that I have had made so far.   Note that the trunnions for this particular time period are tapered.

I don't have much spare time, but if it's in no hurry, I'd be happy to help you out with the 3D designs. Is sounds like a fun and commendable project. I used to work as an artist/designer at a factory running CNC's, so it's fairly easy for me to create most things in 3D. However, I don't have any experience with recent year's development of 3D printers, but I gather the principles are the same (and advantageous, since one don't have to consider areas the tool cannot reach).
How many cannon designs are we talking about?

Thanks Montaigne.  There are a couple others that have expressed interest in helping as well.  Hopefully we can build a little team and get some great things made for the members.  Please PM with your contact information and will I forward the beginnings that I already have when I get back home this weekend.

THANKS AGAIN

Allan

Good to hear others have expressed interest; the idea of a little team doing this sounds like fun! I'll PM you my email for the files. Cheers

Hi Tim,

What ship/era/nationality is this for?

If the RN, keep in mind that there were at least three Armstrong patterns in the 18th century starting about 1720 with redesigns in 1742 and 1760.  The Blomefield pattern gun came into use about 1787 so the design you choose may be somewhat dependent on when in the 18th century you are aiming for.

Most likely the 1760 Armstrong pattern as in your earlier link.

As an update, there are now several folks that have offered help in converting 2D to 3D.   2D drawings of 9 and 12 pounder Blomefields in various lengths have been forwarded to them for conversion to 3D.  Will continue to update as we move along.  Hopefully the full set will wind up covering a long period of time and sizes and benefit scratch and kit builders alike in using appropriate cannon for at least English ships and cover 150 years or more.  If anyone has 2D drawings (based on contemporary information,) of French, Dutch, Spanish or other nationalities, these can be added to the mix as well.

Allan, I might have time as well. The barrels are quick and easy in Fusion 360, the fiddly bit is the decor on top.

This is where it would be good to have a repository somewhere, for the drawings and .stl's.
