Modelled ships many many years ago - mostly Billings, went onto aircraft and Marquetry but now have been promised a nice ship wood kit for my Birthday. Got very enthusiastic but wasnt sure about what size to chose. So thought i would try a cheap card one see whats what, expecting to knock it up in a day or two . Did not quite work out like that I had not realised that at the cheap end of the market you had to supply much of your own card. So can I start with a simple query, I am doing Shipyards Coureur, can I just use any 1mm or thereabouts card from an art shop or are there any recommendations. druxey, mtaylor, Keith Black and 1 other 4

BenD Posted May 18, 2023 #3 Posted May 18, 2023 Welcome to MSW! I've seen people use the card stock from cereal boxes. It's usually about 0.5mm thick so you would need to laminate two pieces together. Craft stores usually have all types of thicknesses, but you will pay an extortionate price. The Shipyard laser-cut kits come with everything to make the kit. They are not nearly as affordable as the 1.96 booklet kits though. ccoyle Posted May 18, 2023 #6 Posted May 18, 2023 Welcome aboard, Chaz! Based on your question, I'm assuming you have the 1/96 scale Shipyard kit? The cheapest way to get 1 mm card is to look for chipboard at a print shop. It's the stuff used for backing scratch pads and the like. It's terribly hard on craft knife blades, though. You can also laminate sheets of thinner card stock together using 3M spray adhesive until you obtain the desired thickness. If you haven't seen it yet, we have a card modeling tutorial in the card section of the ship kits discussion area. ChazG Posted May 19, 2023 Author #9 Posted May 19, 2023 Thanks to all and especially to Chris, I have downloaded the card build guides which seem great and found some art paper folders I had which have close to the required card thickness as backing. So I will see how i get on, but this was not supposed to be a project in itself just as a sort of guide to selecting a wooden kit and remind myself of the "parts" of a wooden sailing ship. But I may be seized , however I really do suspect that the VAST quantity of small paper bits to handle may not play to my strengths !! But anyway I shall give it a try and see. Meanwhile, any suggestions as to a wooden kit will be welcome. As I say I am quite good with small pieces of thin timber from my marquetry endeavours. I was seeking quite a small build , mainly for space reasons, and am a great fan of Hornblower novels. A vessel with guns is not a basic requirement , I would be happy with or without. mtaylor, Keith Black and ccoyle 3
