Sea of Galilee boat by Bryan Woods - FINISHED - SE Miller - 1:20

they required  every clamp I had, bar clamps, spring clamps, c clamps, and clamps that I don't know the name of

Most of the clamps I have don’t fit at this point of the build. At least I couldn’t get them to work. I thought it would be great if my fingers knew Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, lol.

It took a couple of tries, but finally got both #12 planks in. The little dip & twist at the stern is quite challenging.

I carved wedges to place on either side of the keel to hold #13 planks tight.

So close to having the hull planked! I still had a little left in me to carve out the short plank #14 on the port side.

After filling a few cracks with thin strips and CA glue, it seemed to be a good time to stop. I’ll come back when I’m fresh:-)

It’s time to see if the hull will separate.

Between the packing tape, and me wiggling the frames after each glue session, kept the hull from sticking. The frame at the bow was wedged on tight not glued.IMG_2815.thumb.jpeg.470f7ea144bb279d724a86763113d72b.jpeg

If I were a shipwright in the 1st century. And this was the boat I made. I for sure would want Jesus to set out with me:-)

Right on Bryan, a little saw dust and super glue it will look marvelous. Your strong back looks like it faired better than mine lol.

So tell me how many tapered planks did you break, I had one left, and a jar full of quarters lol. It is clear sailing from here on in. Looking forward to more pictures.

I broke one before I even got started good, I guess I was checking the limits of my ability:-) On plank 11 I had it almost perfectly shaped and then the little dip at the stern cracked. That put me in careful mode for a bit. My confidence grew. On plank 12 I broke 2 more, only after I had carved where it met the keel:-) So only 4, thanks to you for knowledge of the rocky road that was ahead of me:-)

Nice work on the planking - and on getting the hull to separate from the strongback. Now for a whole new adventure with the rest of the vessel.

Thank you Steven! You are so right, just the small amount of modeling I’ve experienced. I’ve noticed on each build where one part ends and another starts, I tend to slow down. I may have a manual transmission mind:-) It takes a minute to switch those gears up there.

There wasn’t much progress on the build this week. I filled most of cracks in the bottom on the boat. I carved a bend in a block of wood, similar to the one the ribs will lay against. I soaked the cut pieces in hot water for about 30 minutes. Then lightly crimped the middle of the piece with my fingers.IMG_2851.thumb.jpeg.f17be917e4de9470e3e0f9dc19a580f0.jpeg

Slowly bent it over my block, trying to distribute the tension over as wide as my finger could spread out.

IMG_2864.thumb.jpeg.4583e16cc22513f3e1a6fe32096bacf2.jpeg

Then used the iron to dry it quickly. I’m sure this type wood and this size could be bent any number of ways. But as a beginner, it made me feel like I was doing good:-)

IMG_2886.thumb.jpeg.1d5f64593eb465d99cdbee99beb34358.jpeg

So the ribs aren’t going to win the prize for most exciting part of the build. One of the biggest challenges has become how to not become part of the build. I’m sure I’ve got some skin in there.IMG_2896.thumb.jpeg.549aeb2e9f51cd154b7cf5f0af3ab348.jpeg

Oh, I ask Peter if he wanted to check out his fishing boat. I wanted to see the scale. He is about 3.25”, at 1:20 he’s about 5 1/2’ tall.

Some days I just set a look and think, Then the kid comes out and I play:-)

Very nice work, bending the ribs are a breeze compared to the planks. Bending them and how you do it is all part of the fun, what ever works best for you.  You will be able to plank anything now lol, Great job. now wasn't That Fun, LOL.

Question for viewers. Does the mast look to scale with Peter and the boat?IMG_2932.thumb.jpeg.e78085b413babb510cec0f4f28ef05cc.jpeg

IMG_2933.thumb.jpeg.d2d4709d736a54eb0b51053269ed7323.jpeg

At 1:20 scale the mast maybe 6” diameter.

It looks good to me. Once the sail and rigging is done it will be fine. I never did a thing to my mast, and it looks good . I just double checked  to make sure lol.

Are you going to use amber shellac  for the finish?20230511_155725.thumb.jpg.862886dda1ef095a525cb0b364739c8d.jpg It looks good and easy-to-use.  I got mine at Lee Valley.  I mixed up  4 once, but you only need two.  Great stuff. It will make the boat shine .

Regarding the rigging   the two wire lines lose alot of white paint  when you install them  , thouch them up after you get them to how you like them, last thing I did on mine. Great work my friend.

With as shallow a draft as the boat has, the thick mast could potentially make it top-heavy. The rigging is designed to take the strain of the wind in the sail, so the mast does not have to be that thick. Take a look at another type of ship from around this time-period:

Roman Grain Ship of St Paul | The Model Shipyard |

This is the same type of vessel that ferried the Apostle Paul to Rome. Notice how spindly the mast is on this one. That is possible because the enormous backstay takes almost the entirety of the strain of the wind pushing on the sail. These ships appear on mosaics frequently.

Yes, I was thinking about it. Even though “ I know nothing about it “. As for the mast, I’ve really been searching for productive things to do, while I procrastinate on finishing the ribs. I’m going to sand it down to about 4” diameter . I’m also thinking of a square box  shape around the yard lift hole ( I saw that on another log). Bob,did you coat the outside of the hull with CA? I think I’m going to because I can clearly see the weld seams in some planks.

That is great information:-) I’ve never been around boats other than a cruise ship, I look for small things I can add to give character. I saw this on another log and was wondering if I could duplicate it.

I may have to destroy a few before one appears. So I’ll just keep that one for when I need to procrastinate on something else:-)

Peter, Andrew, add a couple more  and have one sleeping on a pillow at the stern, but I think that's been done before lol.

It is your boat, as far as the mast goes,  it was built in 33 A. D. So it would have been pretty simple, but like I said it's  your boat what ever you decide it will make your's wonderful . You will be happy with the results,  great work my friend.  😬

Well done!! Here I thought your next post would be a Diorama with one of the clamps with a robe walking on the water. Lol

Great job my friend,  throw a coat of amber shellac on it , it will shine.

I think you're having way more fun then I did, lol but that's what it's all about.   Great job, thanks for posting, the First Mate  wants to know which one is Jesus.
