Gretel by Bryan Woods - Mamoli - 1:54

Recommended Posts

Hello ship builders, I chose this kit before I had any experience at all. I may not have enough yet. This build log is going to be more for me to get through the build instead of being helpful to another builder that probably knows way more than me. I encourage all comments, tips advice that will help me out.

The first thing, Do I need to cut the rabbet and Bearing line before the stem and keel are glued to the spine?IMG_1456.thumb.jpeg.440d3f4f0a019c3635a0c01455afd964.jpeg

I’ll be trying to figure it out so I don’t start all wrong:-)

If you are working on a build log that you think may be helpful to me, please leave a link:-) I’ve only found a few logs of this build, I think only one of the newest kit.
Thanks, your help is appreciated:-)

I glued the keel together then overlaid it with  a template for the gain on the keel.

So far I haven’t got the nerve up to cut it out 🙂 but I did scribe it.

I finished cutting in the gains on the keel. This build, has me thinking like a chess player. Trying to look ahead 3 or 4 steps to prepare. I hope I don’t wear out the wood putting it together, only to take it back apart. I’m thinking next will be to glue the keel.

IMG_1532.thumb.jpeg.b362072468745b89af4c4463fb5799dc.jpeg

Then more putting together and taking apart. I do have a spear time project. I need to translate the Italian parts list to English, so I can see where all the different kinds of timber are supposed to go.

Keel glued, not much there to clamp. Here’s what I came up with.

Ok, I’m not sure if I’m correct on this part. The deadwood triangle shape at the bottom of the stern, just got shaved  down level with the rabbet. Let’s hope I was supposed to do it:-)

There is very little English in the instructions, and what I can read is very vague.

Hi Bryan, There appear to be a few build logs on the site so perhaps they may be a useful resource for help with instructions and the construction order?

Still wondering on the depth of the rabbet and deadwood. I laid a plank in the rabbets on either side, so I could see what it looked like from the stern.

IMG_1537.thumb.jpeg.e6fea9f3ca6809725aa9b8edb559ff97.jpeg

These are 1mm thick planks. The second planking is .5mm thick.

After seeing , I sanded the end of the starboard side down about half way.

I’m hoping this will work, I’m not very excited about carving that deadwood down more:-)

Don't worry about sanding the first planking too thin at the deadwood.. Just allow for  the 2nd planking to fit flush with the keel and stern post.

I have built a couple of these kits; one of the older original Mamoli kits, and one of the newer Dusek versions, which I believe you have.

image.png.2f56e79ce6133d4ffa7616db38b80f3e.png

In the new Dusek kit, I found part 17 to not be a good fit,  being too small.  Too big would have been easy to correct.   You may need to make a new part.

image.png.8f37970535fa499df286213aeca768c5.png

This is how the supplied part fit on the plans.

I found a couple of layers of card stock to be adequate for making a replacement.

Bryan, I also have the Gretel (I am born Swedish) so Swedish ships are always interesting for me.
I will follow your build with interest.
Mine is also a Mamoli but with another box. It's all wrapped up in plastic, awaiting to be built along many others...🙂

  • 3 weeks later...

A couple of weeks ago, before I stopped working on this build to finish the Sea of Galilee basswood boat. I glued frames 1-8 on the spine. I got a pic but for some reason that one wants to post upside down. I had to post it vertical:-)IMG_1542.thumb.jpeg.fd624485b8bf3343cfc2170ac7a60f60.jpeg

The last week or so I’ve been reading the instructions over and over, which there is only less than a page of English:-) I did decide the next move was get frame 9 glued. So I glued the last piece of the keel on this morning.

Next will be the decks. I think:-)

Gregory, the cabin roof in this kit seems to be corrected.IMG_1628.thumb.jpeg.7eebf549e3f03ba079d54ccffbafb3bb.jpeg

That is good to know.   I contacted Dusek when I discovered the problem, so it looks like he corrected it.

You have got me motivated to work on my Gretel, so I may have an update soon.

That would be great!! I’m determined to get this ship built even though it’s a new frontier for me. I got so many questions in my head, but don’t know how to even ask them:-) If I make the wrong decision, it’s good to know there are ones that can advise me.

Be sure to bring up questions before gluing or cutting.  I have built Gretel before - a couple of times actually.

I have built for family members who just had to have one of those wooden ships they know I spend so much time on.

It's such a quick little build, if you stick with it.  I've made a lot of side trips that keep me from forging ahead.

I like to experiment with decorative touches since it was supposed to be a 'Pleasure' yacht.

Here is a shot from my Gretel in the gallery.

image.jpeg.db92be5940aa933c874d13da0570e3df.jpeg

I played with making patterns with the wood on the cabin roof and quarter deck.  The cabin doors were printed.

The rigging leaves a lot to be desired because I didn't pay attention to scale very well.  The belaying pins can use refinement, and I didn't show proper coils at belaying points.

I built this kit before I had joined MSW and  the expertise to be found here.

Last week when I was not completely sure what was next, I thought about changing the decking pattern for the aft deck.

IMG_1617.thumb.jpeg.3d8a3c8ad1d8cbc77bd83d56d9ddae88.jpeg

I figured I really needed to  concentrate on just getting it done right and not adding more math and  geometry:-)

BTW, that painted door is amazing. Especially when I’m seeing the actual size of it:-)

Before gluing the decks I wanted to plank  a small area under the hatch in the fore deck where the ladder will be installed.

Then I went ahead and planked the aft deck before the seats were installed.

I cut and bent both garboard and deck level planks for port and starboard sides. I chose to use CA  to avoid awkward clamping.

I got 2 planks on both sides this morning. I measured the distance between the top of the garboard and bottom of the last plank. I wrote the measurements in mm to the right of each frame. The frame numbers are on the second plank. I have tapered the last two planks from frame 3 to the bow . I graduated 1mm off of the 4mm planks. I have 10 more on each side. From the bow to frame 5 the tapered planks will work, but from 5 to the stern do I need to taper that end also?  Ludwig thought I should ask:-)

To get a better  feel for the tapering some measurements help.

image.png.ffa3bf731c4097fea1e4dd62bf3b860e.png

Determine the number of full width planks at '4' then divide the measurement indicated in green by the number of planks.  You might also want to do the same at the stern.

However the measurement at the stern might be a little  bigger than '4 ' which would require wider stock or the introduction of a stealer.

With a first planking I would leave some gaps and fill them in with scrap.

It's really not that critical for the first planking, but it makes for good practice looking ahead to the final planking.

I really did not do a proper job on my earlier builds, so they would not serve as a good example.

I plan on trying to get it right this time but I haven't caught up with you as far as planking is concerned.

Hopefully I will have something soon.
