I’ve read many logs in the past few weeks while waiting for this kit to arrive. I’m planning on retiring in the next year and ship building seems to be similar in certain ways to my occupation. I work off a plan connecting pipes, valves and other components over entire buildings then at the finish dress everything up to be attractive or even unseen. I started this build a few days ago but my internet service was being changed so I’m going to gradually catch up with my progress. I’m not going to do a play by play but I do realize that I had made a mistake right out of the starting gate. At the time things seemed right. The stern cleat wasn’t symmetrical like I saw in the image. I believe I chose the wrong way to install it. After I got the transom glued on and was looking at the assembly I noticed I lined the cleat with the mark but it was to far back. I thought about removing it but I measured the garboard and it was long enough so I moved on. Now I’m learning how one member out of place can change others. When the transom fit in the holder I noticed the angle wasn’t right. I think you will be OK with the transom. My advice is to unglue all the things that aren't quite right and re-do them now, to avoid frustration and disappointment later. I placed the bow end first and had to bridge the gap at the transom with a dab of glue. I kinda enjoy figuring ways to hold the boards without damaging them. It seemed I didn’t do it exactly the same every time. It turned off cold and my work area is climate controlled by what’s outside. It should only make me move slower and that’s probably a good thing. I noticed the broad planks don’t align symmetrically. The starboard plank is higher than the port side. I plan on bending and installing the port side first and place it a close to the edge of the broad plank as I can. Bryan Woods Posted February 19, 2023 Author Share #12 Posted February 19, 2023 (edited) After planks have set I visually inspected and sanded where I thought it needed it, Mainly at the bow and stern. When the time came to cut the dory loose from the build board I was excited! I had only been able to get little peeks at the work I’ve been doing. I see I have room for improvement but there’s not another like it 🙂 I sanded the bow to prepare for the false stem which I cut from the board the stem came from. There was a lot of wood that had to go. So I carefully whittled away most of it then sanded it round by my eye. Next more sanding and eye training for me. Bryan Woods Posted February 25, 2023 Author Share #13 Posted February 25, 2023 (edited) Good afternoon everyone. The weekend finally arrived and lucky me gets some time build time. Next step was cutting and installing the side cleats on the bow and stern ends. After the glue set I sanded and installed the seat risers. The entire time I’ve been working on this build I was thinking of ways I could add my own touch. I’ve decided to display the oars in the position of rowing. My thought is to place small earth magnets under the cap rail and glue a small piece of metal on each oar. We’ll see how my construction plan plays out. The bans were next and they turned out not to be as easy as I was thinking. I could use some better eyes and a few more hands. But I was pleased with the results. After they had set up I sanded across the sheer strakes and bans to flatten and level the tops to meet the cap rail later in the build. One of the strips for the gunwale was broken in half from a bad spot in the wood. It made it easier to measure the length I needed by installing one end at the bow and leave a 45 miter down to meet the other piece from the stern. After more sanding across the sheer strakes. I have figured a way to hide the magnets under the rail. But first the Breast hook and frame irons need to be installed. Next up painting. I generally end up with more on me than where it goes. The painting is complete, and here are some shots of the preparation for the magnets that will display the oars. After cap rails installed I glued magnets in and painted any exposed areas First test to see if they stay on. I enjoyed this build. I learned a fraction of what I need to learn, but really looking forward to my next build which is the Norwegian Sailing Pram. The base that came with the kit, I thought, took away from the Dory. I did look for 1:24 scale figure of a old fisherman but didn’t find any to my liking. Thanks for looking in and commenting.
