Bounty Boat by boerscht - FINISHED - OcCre - 1:24

Recommended Posts

After the Endeavour J-Class my next little project will be the Occre Bounty boat 1:24.

Not that big and beutiful like the Endeavour but the history behind it is fascinating…

So let‘s start:

false kiel is set. And damn it’s not plane, slight left bend, saw this after assembling. Lets hope this will not be a big problem later on.

Really like the ocre colours to stain the wood! They look great.

IMG_3593.thumb.jpeg.4270f720879a10cad4dd72ff1293a7b2.jpeg

thats it for the beginning. Some kiel parts and stabilizers next and then the happy planking part begins…I find the Occre planks much thicker than the amati ones, will probably be harder to work with.

Looks like you're off to a great start!

It may be too late, but regarding the slight warp in the keel: would it be possible to attach the keel to a straightedge of some sort and use the glued floorboards to hold it in position? It may not be much of an issue, though.

Thank you!

yes already tried that with the floorboards. Went better but it’s still not perfectly straight. Maybe with the planking I can get it in shape.

stabilizers at the bow and rear are in place:

I have been trying to work out what size boat this model depicts, could you do one measurement for me?

Hi Craig,

just measured from the 1:1 plan. The length your questionmark shows is in the plan 29,5 cm. So in 1:24 this would be 7,08 m length. Seems reasonsble for me?

So, 23 feet give or take. Thankyou!

The Bounty launch was about 23' 0" long with a breadth of 6' 9".  With this narrow breadth there is a likelihood she was single banked, not double banked as in the posts above.

The Bounty launch model has been discussed in great detail here at MSW based on quite a bit of research by members.

Below is a drawing that may be of help as well as the scantlings for a 23 foot launch that you can compare with the kit to see what you may want to change or add such as the number of frames, and tholes.

The drawing below shows the davit and winch which were likely removed before starting the famous voyage as they would have taken up a lot of space and were of no use anyway.

Did the rudders and some accessories…IMG_3616.thumb.jpeg.81988255f28925fbeee68b59dd860413.jpegIMG_3620.thumb.jpeg.c5bd03e3846a80032397e4e94cfc1f55.jpeg

Also the planking goes easily:

First layer of planking is finished and the cutouts for the rudders are done.

Not much woodfiller needed.

Next up is the sanding.

Should I apply the kiel before the second layer of planks or afterwards?

Some comments:

1. I would apply the keel before the second planking. That way, if the keel is mis-shapen or does not fit properly, it will be partially hidden by the second planking. In fact, I would have done it before the first planking, but too late for that now. It also depends on the keel thickness - if it is too thick, it can be sanded down. But if it's too thin, there is no way out. So check the keel thickness as well.

2. I suggest you remove all those nails before you sand for the second planking. It will interfere with your sanding and make the surface irregular.

3. You used way too much filler! No drama, it can be sanded off. But filler should be used sparingly. I sand the hull with #80 grit first, and then inspect for dips and holes. I wipe on some filler, and immediately wipe the excess away. I hate sanding, and I especially hate sanding filler - so I use as little of it as I can.

Regards, Keith

Hey Keith,

thanks a lot for your points.

1. Yep I will apply the kiel before the second planking.

2. thats what I already did

3. you are probably right. I had one or two height differences in planks to cover but yes it was too much of the good and I am sanding till my arm falls off

Totally agree with Keith's comment.   There is no need for nails to hold properly shaped planks.  They can be held with finger pressure for a minute or so if  using PVA or for a few seconds for those using CA glue.  Same can be said for filler.   If the planks are laid in tight as they should be,  no filler is needed.   Worst case is to smear a little PVA glue in there SLIGHT gaps and then sand while the glue is wet.  The sawdust will fill the gaps and match in color pretty closely for many species of wood,

Great work! Looks neat and tidy. I see you sanded 99% of your filler off, that must have taken you quite a while.

Acrylic clear coat in gloss is sprayed on. Looking sharp I think:

also the rudder is mounted:

Launch mechanism is added:

and winch installed:

next up was setting the already stained and clear coated masts:

Now it starts to look like a really fine little boat!

Let’s begin with the standing rigging. First time for me to rig deadeyes:

Only 11 days since I starten this fun little build and it is already finished.

The rest of the rigging was pretty straight forward and there were no problems with it.

I added to every line a coiled rope at the end and also some tied up rope on the masts. Also added some spare coiled ropes with the bigger brown line to add some more „life“ to the model.

Here are the pictures of the finished Bounty launch boat:

Congratulations! She's a beauty! You work really fast, it seems as if it was only a few days ago you were sanding the hull! In the same time, all I managed to do was complete ONE spar on my model! Where are you going to display her?

Thanks a lot Keith!

I actually don’t know yet where to place it. There is no stand provided in the kit so I have to build one or let it just sit there without a stand.

Probably will end up in my office on the window side besides my desk…

Nice work!

One little suggestion I would make, though (and I don't know if you can implement it at this point), would be to improve upon the oars. The blades should be faired into the handles, and they should taper in thickness toward their tips. I point this out only because the un-faired oars stand out in an otherwise nicely done model.

Cheers!

you are totally right with this. I have to admit that I Just was to lazy to do this. But now in the finished Model I also think it looks a bit off and I will probably fix it later.
