HMS Beagle by JFMjr - OcCre - 1:60 - first build

Recommended Posts

Started my build in November 2023.  Found this website and it has been a great help from many of your builds.

And thanks for those that replied. Looking forward to this build more than ever. Will update my progress. Just starting to paint. Most of the build going forward looks quite intimidating! Sure will need help.

My only comment on this model so far is the directions & plans are a real challenge.

Have you found the youtube videos that Occre produced for this kit?

With your hull complete, what requires nails?

Don't be intimidated.  based on your progress so far, I think you will be happy with your results.  I also build this kit as my first model and loved every minute of the build.  I found the ships boats to be the hardest part, but based on your planking you should do fine.

Good to see you decided to start a build log.  Looking at what you've done so far you shouldn't have too many problems with completing this build.  I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice and support from everyone here.  Regarding the nails, I don't think you'll need them from here.

Looking forward to the rest of the build :)

I agree.  I remember having a lot left.  Any that you use going forward you will probably drill a hole and glue the nail in place.  You won’t use them for the deck at all.  Just glue for the deck.

Appreciate your comments.   Glad you encouraged me to start the build log. Have been painting last few days. Based on another gentleman's help here.  Can pre drill and glue the few I found.  Like rudder I guess?

Thanks..you confirmed my thoughts on pre drill and glue! I had purchased a tiny drill set shortly after starting. It is my first time..Quick to learn there are many tools and items you need to purchase to pull this off   have really enjoyed it so far. Thanks for your help.

For the nails a 0.8 mm drill worked great.

I have a question. I have started attaching the rudder. The brass wire is a poor fit. Do you think making them out of

wood with a better fit would work?

Hi JFMJr,

Not sure I fully understand your question when you say the brass wire is a poor fit.  I presume you are referring to the 1.5mm brass pin (H5) which acts as a hinge pin for the rudder to rotate.  When I fitted mine I crimped the metal band a little so the wire was a close fit.  I also added a drop of CA to ensure it remained in place and didn't drop out.  I'm struggling to see why/how it could be a poor fit.  I guess you could make these pins from wood but I think that would be much harder and I can't see why or how they would be a better fit.

If you are referring to fixing the metal band to the rudder then this is done using the metal pins (A).

Thanks for the reply. without crimping the hinge it was very loose.  The wire was 1/2 the diameter of the hinge. Didn't think of something as simple as crimping it. Thanks for the info!!!

Haven't started the ship boats yet.  Do they plank with the same ones used for the Beagle?

No. I think it is a single layer of 1mm x 3mm or 1mm x 2mm lime wood.

Looks great, your making solid progress. I'm not looking forward to bending those metal rod pieces on the back, for some reason that just looks like it is going to frustrate me.

I was suprised it was easy using the drawing to lay the wire on. Post a pic on were you are at in your build.

'Love the random-joint look of the decking ... likely how many decks were made from deck plank stock from the sawmill, where defects have to be cut out or warpage reduced - yielding planks of various lengths.  These are cut, of course, so that the joint between running planks will center on a deck beam for securement - but there may be no detectable 'pattern' to the joints across the deck (at least not intentional).

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

A little touch up paint.. And am I HMS Beagle is ready for masts and rigging.  My questions are I believe with the ship no longer on its side, permanently attach the stand to the ship? Now is the time to choose permanent stand? Any help greatly appreciated.
