Hello all. This may be an existing topic as I seem to remember seeing it at some point in the past but I cannot find it despite my efforts.
My 21 year old table saw stopped working. I used it fine in the morning and would not start again the afternoon. Two of the connectors to the switch have burnt shrink wrap. While there is no other obvious damage, I  am assuming the capacitor is bad but it is unknown at the moment if the motor is blown. I was wondering if anyone has sourced a replacement motor for their saw of this vintage. The motor does not have a plate or other ID on it so it is unlikely I can find an exact replacement.   If so, I  will source one and make an adapter plate but I thought I would ask here first.  Thanks

First check the switch.  The switch is the first thing to go and you mentioned two connectors to the switch have burnt shrink wrap.  The rocker switches were the weak point.  I replaced my rocker switch as a temporary fix until I could get a replacement rocker switch and I got the rocker switch and it is still in the drawer.

I know of several older saws that had this problem.

Some time ago Jim said that capacitor goes out and can be replaced.  If  replacing the switch does not work send an email to Model Machines and ask about the availability of a new capacitor or a new motor and capacitor.  There is stock and Donna is filling orders for what they have on hand.

Thanks Kurt. I will give swapping the switch out a try first and see about the capacitor next.

I have found the switches to be a slightly weak point but are easily changed.  The capacitors are start and go and are also easily changed too.

If you do replace the switch you can go a bit top gun!  I love my new switch on my sander - it adds nothing to the machine but makes me smile.

I got a new switch and the motor works but I have not put a load on it. I am awaiting a new capacitor as I do not know what caused the switch to burn up. At 21 years, capacitors are too old per my wife, the electrical engineer.

I have not found a similar motor as of yet, but I have not dived too deep yet into that yet. It’s odd that there is no name plate on the motor. I will probably look to find something similar to the disc sander motor

Jim sourced the motors from a company in Oregon but I am unsure if they were the original manufacturer.

Hi @jbeyl, she's absolutely correct they go bad.

This is the 230V motor, though my Byrnes saw has the switch on the side instead of mounted directly on the motor housing regardless it's a simple circuit. I've had zero luck finding this and not sure what purpose they were manufactured for as they have an odd 3 hole mounting pattern and don't to the best of my knowledge fit any standard NEMA or IEC motor frame size.

I replace the capacitor recently - The original lasted about 8 years.

I bought this on eBay and it worked fine.

The simple test for a capacitor fault is to switch the motor on and kick the blade over manually (not with fingers). If it's the capacitor that is dud this should cause the motor to run. The function of the capacitor is to facilitate starting.

I'm told that the problem with capacitors in general is that they do tend to go bad eventually - being not a matter of 'if', but a matter of 'when'.

I swapped out the capacitor. I tested the old one with a meter and was still working but at 21 years, replacement was still a good idea.

ben752, I believe these motors relate to pump units. The closest I have found all seem to be pump motors and they do not seem to relate to standard motor frames etc.

For what it is worth there is a motor upgrade for the Preac saw that uses a motor very similar to the Byrnes saw motor.  Even has the same box with the capacitor inside.  It is sold by Ship Ahoy Models in Saugus, MA.  Phone is 781-231-0212.  The owner's first name is Bob and he's a member of the Boston club.  If you call him and get the information about the motor please let us know here.

The capacitor in our saws is a start and run. It doesn’t only help the initial kick it also runs the motor whilst using it

When my Byrnes saw failed I was able to make it run by manually rotating the blade. Once started it ran quite normally even with a dud capacitor.

Hello. Just a follow up. Kurt had suggested contacting the gentleman at ship ahoy for the Praec motor upgrade. He stopped making and selling them over a year ago. He also would not divulge his source for the motor. So if you are in need of a praec motor, you will need to source it on your own.

Call Donna Byrnes and ask if she has any motors for the saws.  If she has any she will probably sell you one.

just curious... does this motor have a centrifical switch built in? if the switch is sticking, the motor will not run properly on its starter coil causing it to overheat plus draw a conciderable more amperage eventally burning itself out. maybe the switch and cap are a hint its drawing too much; overloading the switch and starter capacitor as a result?
