Progress has been rather slow as of late due to holidays, and other pastimes, mainly selling two motorcycles, and buying one, plus ratline tying is a chore, the main lower mast shrouds, ratlines, catherpins, futtock staves and shrouds are now done.

Decided I really needed to post  few pics to show I'm still here.  With the weather turning, and the end of the soccer/football season approaching (I coach my son and daughters teams) I can finally foresee more time in the shipyard in the evenings.  I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out the deck arrangement, picture are pretty self explanatory and work obviously still in progress.  Margin planks are not glued yet, but I did cut my first scarf joint.  As mentioned previously, estimating the line of the margin plank required the future shape of the interior bulwark once planked to be estimated - I won't know that I've been successful until its too late.

Unfortunately, at lot of this will not be seen once the quarter deck and forecastle are in place, but its good practice and building my confidence to tackle the more visible top decks.

My unimate with a three jaw chuck is an ideal tool for mast making, the photos show various stages of shaping dowel into the different mast parts, masking off certain parts and then shaping them. The main tools I use are a small file; needle files; and various grades of sand paper plus a micrometer. In general I found the hard wood dowel supplied in the kit works well and there seems to be plenty to make all the necessary masts and spars. The parts for the fore mast are now made so I am going to build that mast up first before making up the parts for the other two.

Hi all I made a start on what is going to be a massive project in which HMS Warspite is involved in an air attack by the Germans.
I will be using Academy's 1/350 Warspite and several other scales of model aircraft also will be using led's for the explosions and lighting the water spurts from near misses with bombs. I wont be getting the Warspite till my birthday in roughly a fortnight but have made a start on the base and some of the planes I will be using. Here are some picks of where I am at, at the moment.                             the smallest bombers are 1/350 scale kindly donated to this project the 1/144 stuka's are zevada the 1/72 Stuka in the process of being built is Academy and I have a 1/72 Airfix FW190 to go on the Dio too. as you can see it will be a long term project.

Hers a few pics of my latest work. Building and installing the tiny PE ladders from Toms Modelworks. Someone commented about getting to the fiddly bits and this model has em in spades. To Top it off I had to redo all the lettering because I stripped them all off when I absentmindedly put masking tape over them. The next big project will be making the life Raft racks. There are 25 rafts to fit.All of the superstructe is wood block with styrene laminated using R/C 56 or equivalent. Its a glue the RCers use to attach plastic canopies. Seems to work well. We'll see 10 yrs down the line. All the cargo masts are scratched from Styrene. I'm doing this project for a local museum so even though I'm volunteering my time there is still incentive to get finished. I've been putting in 4-6 hrs /day  with a day off here and there for 3 months  now. I haven.t totaled up the time. So much for now. Bill in Idaho

Small progress, I've at least committed to the approach I'll take on the deck planking.  Nothing too exciting, but I will install a margin plank which I haven't done before, even though this will barely (if at all) be seen.  I've decided to try planking off the ship to make this a little easier.  Worst case, it will be good practice for the quarterdeck and forecastle, but I do hope to leave the option open to leave some of the fo'csle gratings off so a little more can be seen.  I've used the placement of the deck beams per AOTS to determine where the planks terminate.  The margin plank curve was estimated from laying a plank along the interior bulwark and tracing the shape on the false deck.

Still early days, but no major hiccups yet...

Just a small update With the rat lines tied I turned my attention to the futtock staves and the catherpins, the staves were made from 1mm brass wire and the catharpins from lengths of serve rope with eyes made as previously described and stiffened with pva they will be tied to the shrouds and the wire cut to length painted matt black.

Hi Jason I as noted in my log,I moved the gun port to clear the frame as they lined up from the side view, but then found it line up ok ish  from the over head plan, better to move the port than lose the support of the bulkhead, one of the trials of this kit.
I used maple for all the decking and it looks fine, I cannot understand why kit makes supply Tanganyika for decking it just is the wrong colour.

    Fore Mast Shrouds
The shrouds on the fore masts were made next, and the fore most shroud on either side is served right the way down to the dead eye I believe this was to strengthen it as it was liable to be chaffed by the sail, all the others were severed as shown in the rigging book about two thirds of the way down to the futtock stave, they ended up not all exactly the same length down,to achieve that I would still be doing them at Xmas. The dead eyes were added to the ends of the shrouds and rigged at this point.
