    Good day,

Well there hasn't been much work going on in the shipyard of late but I did manage to put several coats of poly (water based) on the boat and get the hatches on. I've tapered the mast and boom and will do the gaff today. A few little pieces to make and things to figure out. I think I'm at the 90% completion mark so I'm feeling good.

    Best, Ian

I think... (operative word here is: think) that I got it.  Not as perfect I would like but I've pushed my limits to the extreme.  All three windows are in on the starboard side.  I might (yeah.. sure... he says to himself... I know I will) re-visit these and see if I can make them better after doing the starboard side.  All in all for a first effort at scratching  quarter galleries with minimal plans... I'll give myself a B+.

A bit of cleanup in the shop, and I'll turn this around to the other side.  The next side ought to be a bit faster as I won't be re-cutting windows and reworking everything.  That part has been done. <crosses fingers>

I'm feeling like if I can do these galleries... I'm ready for anything.  Even carving.

Thanks for the comments and "likes".

It's mostly just fiddly work in Corel Draw.  No programming as such, David.  Which makes me very happy.

Well, all has not been quiet here in the shipyard.  making progress.  On the down side, it is slow, slightly maddening work to translate a 2D drawing into a 3D part....  Luckily, when the first side is done, the second side should go a lot faster.

I've got two of the three windows glazed and in place.  The third is currently somewhere in the workshop with the glazing drying (I'm using liquid glaze).  I've probably cut and re-worked, and re-cut 20 or wo windows to get to this point and I find them very fiddly indeed.

I've started working on the gallery roof(s) and drop(s) for both sides but have nothing to show in photos yet.

So here's the two windows in place.  Feel free to speak up if something is awry while I can still get access to the part.

The slight (ahem) misfit at the bottom of the taffrail where the lower molding meets will be hidden by carvings.  I've started those also....

The idea with soft inner side of the clamps paid off, it flexes in difficult tight corners, no damage to the wood or to the finish:

Just need to make more of them, waiting for the shipment of nylon screws.

In a meanwhile, used my mill for the mass production of the scarph joints. Took 40min for two batches, including mill setup and a cleanup!

Rough cut angle planks are fixed in the mill:

First some passes to make them all level.
Then cutting the ends to the depth of the joint (2mm in my case):

Dividing the remaining joint in 2 equal parts, using mill table to measure the distance (do not forget to offset the cutter diameter). Cutting with the same 2mm depth:

The resulting joint is perfect, but a bit too tight, needs force to be assembled, no space for glue.

Sliiightly trimming ends of the planks on a disk sander, carefully with the angles:

    And that's it!

Without a mill, it would take me half a day to make all these joints with chisel and file, and they would not be so straight..

    Result of the day:
clamps are steamed and fixed into place, left overnight to dry

Marked all deck clamps locations and now playing with a small simple clamps that will help to glue deck clamps in place (no pun intended).
The inner surface of the clamp is the extra soft basswood from the longboat kit, it is very good for clamping because it will never scratch the surface.
But it can't hold anything in place, so the back side of the clamps is made of pear. Seems to work!
The screws are nylon to avoid scratching the frames.

(this is a temporary strip, not a real clamp. Just to mark a nice curve)

At this point the hull has been painted. After masking the hull off. I painted the hull completely white. Once dried and done with the white color, i masked off the white and painted the portion of the hull that will be black. On the inside of the bulwarks I brush painted a portion black. The rest was left unpainted. I liked the look of the a portion of the sapaley painted and the rest bare. You will also see the finished painted cannons.

you will also notice how you can see the strake lines which i left on purpose for a more authentic look.
i really do not enjoy painting because i do not think i am very good at. plus when the paint is drying i must wait the alloted time for it to dry, which is something i do not much care for. i like modeling at my pace, but in this case the paint is in control of the pace.....

questions and remarks are very much welcomed....

Thanks for following and the likes and comments.  To me, this is an adventure.  And we know from Tolkien, "adventure makes one late for dinner".

    Jeff,
I'm winging it.   I know what it needs to look like, it's the getting there that's the adventure.

It may not be for long.  I'll probably do some flipping as I do some things to the exterior.

    Dan,
That's the "as built" config.   The "as captured" (my build) is this drawing.  I think the answer is "yes" they are curved and not straight.  The lower edge of the windows (the molding strip) runs from the wale, drops a bit and then ends at the wale.  The whole thing is curved from front to back.  Hahn notes this in his NRJ article on Licorne which is what alerted me to be careful and think this through.

Thanks for the comments and likes and for looking in.

I've spent the last 4 days, working on the two main windows and tweaking the frames for the galleries.  The top was too far outboard and the windows didn't lean inward.   I've also done several iterations of the two rearmost windows to get the fit.  Here's were I am this weekend.   The windows will get cleaned up more (laser char) and then glazed before installing.  I'm going with full glazing as I think it will look better.  I'll also add the planking between them and finalize the forward most window.   I'm hoping that it will have the 3 panes wide but we'll have to see.  I'm thinking that this window was overall narrower than the other two with rectangular panes instead of square-ish.

Here's the pictures.  The first picture shows the "lean" that I was talking about with the red lines for emphasis.  The other two just show the window placement.

'Positively final farewell appearance!' So the old theatre posters read. And this is true for the Greenwich Hospital barge. The sub-base has been made and finished, and so is this log. My profound thanks to all who looked in, 'liked' and commented. You are a great world-wide network of craftspeople with whom I am proud to be associated. Happy model-making!

Serious enquiries of interest only for acquiring this model are invited.

Started marking the deck clamp positions, seems pretty straightforward:

But I am really confused about the location of the lower deck clamp.
The method is very simple - take the deck beams locations, make an offset because they are inserted into 1'' recesses in the clamps, mark the clamp position accordingly.

However, the lower deck beams line has some weird step, according to Hahn plans:

Original NNM plans have two sets of beams pictured, one of them is in dotted lines:

    Close-up:

I am really confused about the meaning of it. With an open and unplanked hull, I do not want to make a stepped lower deck clamp, it will not look nice.

    Would really appreciate an advice!

    Hello Mike,

for me it looks like the aft magazine. But what was really build? The description of the floor plans at the NMM says:

So I think, that the dotted lines are those after the reconstruction of the ship in England at your plan.

When I'm right then are the full lines the construction in the hold and the dotted lines these of the orlop deck at this plan.

So what would you build, the american or english version? An other question is, because you would build a beautiful model and not a realistic model you should leaf it out. Most admiralty models started the interior with the gun deck, so that you could see through the frames.

You have build a really beautiful model, congratulation

    I hope I could help,
    Siggi
