Chris,
I just found your log. What a great start to what appears to be a long build. Great work! Please tell us the over-all dimensions as this looks larger than the Chaperon. Will follow along with pleasure.

Thank you for the compliment, Steve. Last month the admiral and I visited Presque Isle and the Niagara Museum. The ship was not in port, so we continued to our destination--Rochester, NY-- to visit family and friends. Guess what ship was moored alongside the port of Rochester? You are right. I talked to a sailor in training, who happened to be from Erie, about the lifting exercise. He explained to me that it did not occur outside the bay, but over a bar that was inside. I have not had time to check that out, but it is interesting.
btw, I have also built a model of the gunboat Philadelphia after visiting the replica boat at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and the actual gunboat at the Smithsonian Institute.

Hi Ron,
She looks great. Very well done.
Btw, what is the diameter of the wheel you have made?
It appears that you have added a finish to the decks.
Did this have any influence on gluing any items to that finish?

Hi Ron,
Great job you have going there. If you don't mind, I'll pull up a barrel, have a seat and join the gallery. I've just started my Chaperon last week, and looking forward to the voyage.

Hello Mike,
Sapele (sa pee le) is a member of the mahagony family. It is grown commercially in Western
Africa. It can grow to 60 feet tall before any limbs branch out, so it is knot-free. I just built a table out of it for myPhiladelphia

Hello Steve,
I just ordered a display case for my Philadelphia from Houston Display Cases and I can recommend them highly. I have two others from them for my picket boat and the Niagara. Mahogony is expensive but nothing sets a model off as well as a beautiful mahogany case. The workmanship is top quality. Website is www.displaycasestands.com. They will use others woods as well. PM me if I can be of further help.

Hello everyone,
Just to add my $.02. I built the same clamping device as Captain Steve but added a lazy susan base to the bottom board. It is invaluable for rigging both sides of the model.

Hello members,
Has anyone noticed that the newly offered kit of the Essex in the "Catalog of savings 2015" using offer code FC14 from ME is at a price of $449.99 up from my last catalog price of $299.99. This is significant!! Anyone want to comment on this??

Joseph,
Just one more thing I forgot to say----Don't give up the ship!!

Jim,
I saw that ad. They are in California and will not ship. Must arrange for pick up. Great price if condition is good.
