Mike Dowling got a reaction from Nikiforos in Louise by Mike Dowling - FINISHED - Constructo
    Hi everyone.

Thought you might like to see my next build.

This one is to tide me over until I start another big build. Louise is a small Victorian steam launch, the kit from Constructo who I have never had anything to do with before.

The kit arrived in a nicely packed box with various bits and pieces in numbered bags that are referred to in the parts list. The build instructions are in a booklet in about a zillion languages including English accompanied by a booklet of photographs at various stages of the build. There is also a 1/1 plan sheet showing side elevations and various parts of the build including the boiler construction and that of the cabin.

The only laser cut parts are for the deck and the hull frames. The rest of the kit is various sizes of five different types of wood which seem to be of good quality.

If this is a new kit they will be thin plastic. If it's older they will be paper. What I did was to photocopy them onto thin card and stick those on instead with pva.

I have heard really good things about the Caldercraft kit.

Also, Amati is releasing a kit of the Victory in 1/64 scale that should be really impressive.

I built the Victory in 1978-80, but as I could not afford any kind of kit at that time, I bought only the plans from one of the kit manufacturers, (might have been Mantua but I  don't remember)  Those plans and a used copy of the Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by Longridge got me started into scratch building.    I bought plywood for bulkheads, and other woods for the rest of the model, including poplar and maple from the local lumber yards and cutoffs from a local cabinet making shop.   I had a  cheap table saw for power tools, everything else was files, chisels, blades, hand saws  and sand paper.   Just one  alternative to a kit that some might want to consider.

Thanks Mark,  I realize there will be lots of opinions and that it is probably subjective anyway. Just thought it was worth an ask. I will do some hunting anyway.

I find your ingenuity quite amazing, you are a very clever chap. Your build so far is terrific. I am intrigued to know what your next build is going to be as you say it is expensive.

It's a bit late for me to do a log now David as I have finished the ship but I like the idea. I agree generally about Amati kits, I have made Revenge as well but they are mean with their wood and all the bits and pieces, deadeyes, rivets, o pins and the like so you either need a nice stash of bits or beware of making mistakes or losing any!!

Your experience with Amati on parts is different from mine -- on all my Amati kits I have had a lot of leftovers in terms of wood, blocks, rope, etc.  Now my Mantua Cutty Sark is a different story -- I have had to dip into my "stash" lots of times.

    Regards,
    David

I'm glad the log was helpful to you.  I really enjoyed this kit -- and in fact have enjoyed everything I've built from Amati.  The quality is really first class in their kits.  On the Titanic box, it says "museum quality", and if you don't mess it up, that's what you get.

I have seen some members refer to the group of those who have built a Swan class ship (either Pegasus or Fly).  Maybe we can be the start of the group that has built the Titanic.

Just to add a postscript to this log, (hope you don't mind David) I have just finished the same model and with effort she certainly builds into a very handsome beast. I won't post any pictures of mine as they will just look the same. I did try to light mine with varying success as some lights are too bright and some too dim. The portholes are so tiny that the lighting effect doesn't really show.
Anyway, many thanks to you David as your log has been invaluable. This model is definitely not for the novice as you have to refer to written instructions, a photo album and eight sets of plans all at the same time. Planning ahead is essential and you really do have to work out what order to do things in on your own.
Having said that it is a very good package albeit rather pricey and do be careful, there is no extra anything with this kit which makes mistakes very costly. A really good challenge for all you master builders out there!!

    Happy New Year to all.

A big thank you to Cap'n'Bob and GuntherMT for your generous comments. All I had to do next was put the bits together, add the awning a some deck furniture and Louise is now finished.

She turned out quite well I think. I did go to the extra expense of buying some brass rod because it gives a much better result. Why do these kit manufacturers include brass wire wound up ? It is impossible to straighten properly and gives a very poor finish although I have to say I used their stuff for the boiler fittings.

Anyway, I hope you like her.

    Greetings

Next item to be completed are the capping rails.  not a difficult chore but several of the rails running across the ship need to be curved and sanded to be sure they smoothly join the rails running the length of the ship.

When all the rails were place, one area amidships needed attention  Arrow on the pic below shows an area where 2 curved wood pieces go to complement the small wales

These have quite a curve so they were made by hand.  a photocopy of the area was glued to a 2 mm strip of bass wood and then trimmed to size.

    one glued in place below

    now both...

finally stained.  Some of the surrounding wood has to have some stain reapplied as it was removed with the sanding.

next, some work on the deck fixtures
