ChrisLBren got a reaction from Racer2000 in Confused newbie
Hey Bruce,
Pick up this book - I purchased it back in 1994 when I was getting into the hobby - and successfully built an AL Harvey, POB as my first ship model. You can find a Harvey on Ebay - very simple hull lines and rig. While not entirely accurate - its an easy fun build to get your feet wet. Mastini references this build along with the Blue Nose in the text of his book.

Gents - here are some progress shots of my workshop - notice 2 out of 3 tables are on rollers for maximum efficiency. Also they are height adjustable. I installed the JET Air Filtration system as well. Next up - on order - 10 inch table saw and 13 inch planer to break down a swiss pear board for my next build.

Thanks for the replies ! As far as my power tool setup on the bench - these tools are simply stored this way - when in operation they will get reconfigured - again they are on a table with coasters - so I will push the bench away from the wall when in use (thickness sander, Byrnes table saw etc).
As far as the table saw - just buying a 745 portable Dewalt which will enable me to rip down a board to usuable stock for the Byrnes tools. The planer also will make life much easier than relying on the Byrnes Thickness sander - which is a precision tool.
For now - finishing the Confederacy - almost there !

ChrisLBren reacted to tlevine in HMS Atalanta 1775 by tlevine - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - from TFFM plans
Time for a bit of an update. The quarter deck framing is completed. There are several openings in the midline which need to be addressed. Most forward is the ladderway, followed by the upper capstan step. Behind that are three gratings panels. Each of the gratings is designed to be different in width, so they needed to be made individually, rather than making a long strip of grating and simply cutting off the length required.
This leaves a final opening in front of the mizzen mast. On the deck plan there is a dotted line within the outline of the hatch, suggesting that the was a structure inserted into the opening. The openings for the grating do not have the same dotted line; therefore the structure was not a grating. David states that it is possible there was a companion over this opening. On the plan view there is no structure visible above the hatch coaming. Below this opening is the salon...officer's country. I doubt they would have wanted to get wet or, even more so, have their conversations overheard. So a companion will be made for the opening.
Finally, there is a scuttle for the topmast tackle in front of and lateral to the ladderway opening.

ChrisLBren reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Been a bit since the last update. Thanks for following along on this journey of discovery and sawdust and for the likes and the comments.
A bit of a minor/major milestone... the ship is in the cradle... YIPPEE!!!!!
The next step is start removing the build board and trimming down the frames to the sheer strake(s).
I considered pedestals versus a cradle as I didn't want to stress the keel, etc .nor did I want to attempt to put a large baseboard on at this point. The cradle just seems (to me) to be steadier and stronger. I noted that I do seem to get some wobble on my Constellation which is on pedestals. It could be my method of mounting is faulty or just the way it is with them.
The cradle is 1/4" mahogany (see photo). After finessing it into position, assembling it and re-finessing, I drilled a 3/32" hole through the cradle and inserted a brass tube of the appropriate diameter. I mounted the cradle into position, and drilled (using the tubing as a drill guide) a 1/16" hole through the keel, frames and keelson. A brass rod was inserted with a light coating of epoxy. When set, the cradles were set into place with more epoxy on the brass rod and in two places on each end of the cradle. The structure seems sound and steady.
I tried to design the cradle so as not to hide the lines of her and I think I pretty much succeeded. At some point, the hole where the crosspieces go through the cradle will be covered by a small carving on each. I'm leaning towards a fleur de lis.
Anyway, here's the pictures.
