Blue Ensign got a reaction from BobG in HMS Sphinx 1775 by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64 scale
    Post One hundred and Sixty-one.
     The Launch – completion

    8258
Busy, busy, in the workshop, a case of spot the the boat.

    8264
With the wash-boards attached a fair bit of cleaning up is required, but overall  I am satisfied that the modification was worth it.

    8265

    The Rudder
The final addition; as with the other boats I put the kit arrangement aside in favour of  a working rudder using the typical long pintle at the lower end.

    8254(2)
The long pintle is silver soldered using a fine brass eyebolt and pin.

    8255(2)
A brass micro tubing sleeve  is used to give support where it fits into the lower stern post.

    8266
The long pintle is particularly important  in relation to the Launch as to work the Davit the rudder would need to be removed quickly and easily.

    8260

    8262
If the rudder is shown in place, then the Davit is stored in the Stern-sheets.

    8270
If the Davit is shown in place, then the Rudder is not fitted, it would be taken onboard.

    8274(2)
For display purposes I will have the Davit in place as it is a launch specific fitting.

    8276(2)
With ten days labour I think I’ve had my moneys worth out of the Launch kit, a lot of modifications in one small hull.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been busily trying to complete the Yawl, which is now all but done.

Sphinx is now back in her case whilst we decamp to the Lake District for a spot of hill walking.

She’s looking great Doug, a fine clean job you’re doing.

As far as the head tapering is concerned, Allan is correct in that the head did taper from top to bottom, but as far as the kit is concerned such adjustments may affect the other kit designed features, such as fit of a figurehead, and other features around the headworks. In my humble opinion best left alone unless you’re planning a modification early in a kit build, lest the outcome looks not as good as the original.

Hello - quite a few steps forward. Pumps made with added spout plus winch assembled.

The instructions say to make the pumps with a 40mm long dowel but as they drop through the hole situated below on the lower deck resulting in the pumps being too low. Therefore have added a toothpick painted black so the pumps drop down to the required height.

Anchors assembled - using black tape for the metal bands.

Finally got all the cannons rigged and all the deck stuff mostly glued in place except pumps - to be fitted at a later stage when safe to do so.

Now have started the Cutter as per instruction.

Thanks for looking and the 'Likes'.

Hello - it's been awhile since last posting as work on the cannons has been excruciating as they are so small as everyone has mentioned plus a spell of the dreaded Covid and other things getting in the way.
Anyway here are some pictures of the cannons at various stages.

Only done one half so far with a rather bad attempt at some frapping.

Thank you for looking and I will push on and get the other side done.
Thank you whitejamest for your comment - much appreciated.

Hello - Deck Bulwark Cleats plus Belaying Pin Racks all pinned into place as instructed. The Belaying Pins I opted for wooden ones.
Also the Channels pinned into place with the Deadeyes which have the Strops yet to be pinned down at the correct angle.
The Steps I have decided to leave unpainted.
I opened the Strops to take the Deadeyes by sliding the Strops over a tapered dowel - they are very delicate. Found sliding Strops over a tapered dowel helped to keep their shape whereas using tweezers to open them up found I was distorting them but then again maybe doing it wrong.

    Thank you for looking.

Hello - now the bow is done. The Main Rails and the Rail parts assembled plus the Cathead Knees as instructions although have painted the Rail parts underneath slightly different to how James H did. I kept the yellow stripe with a black surround to be in keeping with the Swivel Gun Supports.

Thank you for your nice comments - BobG, DelF, glbarlow and Theodosius.
BobG - you're doing fine so far. Hopefully you have recovered from your medical treatment / op and you will be soon back at doing the hull planking.

Hello - further progress. The Upper rails and Swivel Gun Posts fixed in place having painted the upper area in a blue. The blue is Humbrol 25 with some white and purple added.

The Stern section is next on the to do list.

    Hi All,

Well, the Dutchess of Kingston has officially been finished. It took me some time to finish working around
my other builds, but it was well worth it. I want to commend Chris Watton for producing such a wonderful
kit that looks great and is a pleasure to build. I look forward to some of Vanguards future releases and trying
to figure out what one I want to build next.

To those who built the Duchess before me thank you for your logs. They saved me more times that I can count.
Thanks to all of you for your comments, support and likes. It was deeply appreciated.

A small Speedwell update. The lower ratlines have been installed as well as the euphroe tackle and crowsfeet. On many models I see they appear oversize. At 1/4" scale though we should be able to approximate the 1" ratline and 3/4" crowsfeet diameters. For the ratlines I use Guterman polyester Mara 120 thread (dark brown). For the crowsfeet I used 6/0 Uni-Thread, dark brown. I tried 6-0 silk for this but it just kept fraying (such is the nature of silk). I must admit that making the euphroes with their numerous no. 78 drilled holes (there are nine in the main euphroe), setting up the euphroe tackle and rigging the crowsfeet was an exercise in patience (and frustration). I was so pleased with my first attempt until I realized that I had reverse rigged one hole and had to redo the whole thing.  Onward and upward (literally)!

Just had my second and third 8k 3d printer arrive. I need this many as kits have a lot of multiple parts, like cannon barrels.

This is my main 'production area' now, along with laser material storage. (and completed Indy laser cut parts). I will need to get a third extractor for the smaller laser machine at some point, though, as both of my current ones are attached to the large laser. Right now, the laser is cutting more Sphinx 0.6mm pear, as I was running short.

Chris, I'm so pleased that you have plans to do more figures at some point in the future, when your work schedule allows.  In just a few weeks, you have single-handedly (well, with the help of your carver) doubled the number of quality figures available, certainly for those working in 1/64 scale, and produced the lovely furniture too.
