Boy! I guess I should get busy and post some progress. Not much to show for 6 months, but I did get my mast shrouds finished this time without cutting the wrong wire. I have also installed both life ring holders and  have mounted both boats. Added a step on both sides of pilot house just to round things out.

I would agree with wefalck, and add that the plans show a wood deck in the 2nd class saloon. How it ties in with the wood gangway it does not show. 1st class has carpet runners which I guess could have been put down over a metal deck.
Interesting looking vessel should make a great model.

Ilhan, My current project uses a rod and chain type of steering. The rods run in a box like channel which the cabin coaming is one side of the box. The channel top is removable( bolted or screwed ) so any breaks can be got to.  Where crew have to cross over there is a ramp butted to each side to prevent tripping.
On yours the box like channel is pushed up against the rail coaming. The rail coaming would be one side of the box. Below is what I see in your drawings above.

Just so you all know I do work on my model from time to time. Like most I have many spring and summer things to do and do not get to spend much time in the shipyard. I have managed to cast some deck cleats( twice ) The first ones I ended up not liking, in photo on the left. The second ones are more correct with the wood block base as I have seen examples locally. For my stays and shrouds I used some telephone wire That had four coated strands and each strand has 7 small copper strands. After cleaning the coating from the wires I separated them and twisted up 3 strands for my davits and stack stays also aft mast shrouds. For my main mast shrouds I twisted up 7 strands. I used a single strand as whipping to tie off eyes. the copper wire will take L.O.S. nicely. Now on to the shroud bars/ladder.

    Happy New Year, folks!

Thanks for all of your Likes and comments on Genesis’ progress.

A quick update.  I’ve been working on Genesis’ bridge over the past few days.  So far, I’ve managed to make the four chairs for the skipper and other crew members that man the bridge.  Off to one side there’s another chair and chart table for the Navigator.  Immediately opposite on the other side, there’s a small L-Shaped settee and a table.

Still lots of work to go.

    Have fun!

Construction progress. The model is almost finished. It is necessary to make four boats, a little work with rigging and hang the remaining boats.

Ilhan, Could it be that the wood used in the gangway is of a hardwood to hold up against heavy foot traffic. Plans show pitch pine as decking material which to my way of thinking is a softwood and would wear more under heavy use ( loading and unloading ).
In the above picture do you think they could have gotten any more people onboard?
You are right , questions ,questions.

Ilhan, As near as I can tell from the plans posted,is that the main deck was decked with 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 pine from bow to stern. Both sides of boiler space as shown on plans and both sides of engine space must have been decked with wood just not shown on plans. Example; Note on plan (teak cover over steering chain ) Why have a teak cover on a steel deck? Same goes for the steering rods aft, why have fancy teak covers with out a wood deck?
The gangways I would have the same thickness as the deck ( no tripping edges ) just the deck boards are much wider. Plans note ( for detail of gangway see special plan ) Do you have that plan?
Anyway that's my thoughts on the decking.

So, you know how I said we had a "snowy weekend" coming up? Well, that turned into the third-highest snowfall on record for this part of Missouri at 16.4" as of this morning and it hasn't stopped (that's over 40 cm for you folks in sensible countries). Where I grew up, along the Great Lakes, this wouldn't be all that special, but out here in the southern Midwest it's pretty spectacular. I'd enjoy it more if it didn't create so much work, between trying to plow out our long, steep driveway (we live in a narrow rural creek valley) and working to keep our hundreds of young pine trees and fruit trees from breaking under the strain. Here are a couple photos, which don't do the snow justice as it's already begun to settle and compact. It was nearly to my knee and I'm 6' tall (and we had no wind, that's all straight accumulation, not drifting). We moved here in 2006 and have now been present for three of the top five snowfalls on record (going back to at least the late 1800s).

One of my full-scale wood projects, a garden shed built entirely from cedar we cut and milled on-property.

Kitchen porch buried. The bird feeders need air traffic control, but unfortunately they're furloughed due the the US government shutdown.

Anyway, due to the scope of this storm I didn't do as much model work as I hoped, but made some progress. The basic boiler structure is essentially done, though I may add a few details. I also made the brick paving that goes in front of the furnaces, so ashes could be scooped out without setting the deck on fire. Here's a portion of the original from the museum:

And here's my version, made by carving a piece of wood with a razor saw and file, then using multiple layers of stain and pastel to subtly vary the bricks. It wouldn't stand up to really close scrutiny (like a camera lens) but it'll only be viewed obliquely on the model, so I'm not too worried.

And here's a few shows of the boilers placed on the model temporarily.  I also drilled holes in the engine assemblies and decks so I could set them in place using pins. This is nice because (a) they always go to the right (same) place now and (b) are more stable when on the deck. I'm not going to glue them on until the last minute because it'll be very useful to lay out the next deck on the open main deck.

I think that, next up, I'll start laying out the boiler deck (the deck above this one, so named despite not having the boilers on it).

Looking good Eric! Styrene is such an adaptable material. an old ball point also works well for riveting simulation in thin styrene.

I pulled this from a small magazine I did for Gn15 forum (a model train site) many years ago.

    Warping Engine

The Lib ships had a steam-powered engine on the after deck that was used to drive two capstan heads which were used to take the slack out of mooring lines or even to pull the ship into a pier if no tugs were available (the same thing could be done by the anchor windlass up forward). It was a simple two-step reduction gearing. Interesting feature was that there was no crankshaft - the piston rods were connected to the outer edges of two discs on the outside of the bedplate.

The kit provides a simple drum winch of britannia metal to serve as the warping engine. It is a little under scale for height and I thought I might be able to scratch build something more realistic. Here is the the kit and what I started out with:

Here’s after the gears (from a bag of old watch parts) , guards and shaft have been added:

And the finished product with the shaft supports. The capstans are after market from the Bluejacket catalog. The kit provided slightly smaller ones which I had planned to use but then I got careless while sanding them and squeezed one out of round too badly to repair, I forgot just how soft britannia can be.

Here it is installed on the model with the canted fairleads in place:

Made this spreader adapter for my little drill press so I could use it as a mill. Light wood milling is all I will use it for but now I can adjust the depth of  cuts.
    Happy New Year everyone
