Hello to all and Happy 2016. Thanks for all the comments and the like button.
Greg, the finish I have now has been sprayed with an acrylic satin finish varnish. I'm trying to preserve this color. Since everything is crisp and brand new looking I want to keep the whole ship this way.
Thanks George, glad we're all safe at home.
Thanks Piet, the same for you and Gwen, give her a hug and a New Years kiss for us.
Thanks Mark, hope all is well in Oregon, you guys have been getting kind of beat up lately

Hi everyone and many thanks for all of your comments and well wishes for the New Year! Greatly appreciated.
I've done some more work on the major components of the superstructure; paying particular attention to how they can be removed easily for viewing.
Here are the latest progress shots.
Cheers

Well stocked up myself John, since I don't go out on "amateur nights" either. I've seen the majority of people can't drive sober most of the time, let alone after drinking.

New cutting blade discovery (for me)....
How many of these great X-ACTO blades do we go through in a year?
For several years, I have re-sharpened and re-shaped dozens of these blades we all so rely on every day.... (top photo)
With all the fine detail carving I'm trying to do now, I decided to give the Micro-Mark "scalpel" blades a go.... (second photo)
As seen, the mini-scalpel set offers a great assortment of shapes, and the difference in sharpness is truly remarkable.
The "clean out" of the material in the tiny scroll clip art seen here turned out much cleaner than any I have previously done with the standard X-ACTO blades I've been using.
Just thought I would share this (for me) great new discovery.
Well worth the small investment.

Thanks for your comments George, Mark, Piet, Patrick.... and for all the visits and likes.
Feels great to see the SOS changing again after setting her aside for three months to build Dr. Pillsbury's ship.
The upper deck guns.... Except for the eight waist cannons, all that firepower you see is pretty light weight at this point.
Middle level gun deck....I still must fit 30 more heavy cannons (dummy guns) into the middle gun ports with raised lids w/ hinges and ropes.
Lower Level gun deck.... The 26 lower level gun ports were armed with heavy cannons but will have closed lids.
I haven't decided yet if the lids will have any sort of carvings.
Trying to imagine the feeling of the Captain and crew of an unfriendly vessel seeing this monster turn broadside on them.
Happy New Year All!

Hi Dave
She's looking brilliant; what with the cannons, the carvings, the bamboo plankings, all mixed together with lots of hard work and skill. Very nice!
After six days of rigging the cannons, I reckon you've earnt a long siesta.
Have a great New Year.
Cheers

The same template process was used to rout the profile of the apron.

Here's how I plan on making the stem, a test piece was made from pine. I'm going to use template routing. To do this requires a template of the desired profile. I won't go into details on pattern routing, it would take much text to describe the process in detail and would bore 99% of you. Anyone interested can google "template routing" or "complimentary template routing" to see the process described in detail.
I made a pattern of the stem's profile at the apron by sanding to a paper template. This pattern has to be made perfectly as it will be the master for all other templates needed. The I used the pattern to create negative pattern out of high quality hardboard..
The negative pattern has to be reduced by the diameter of the pattern router bit to be used.
Here it fits the stem profile perfectly.
The stem blank was made using scarph joints.
Next, the stem blank was placed in the proper location on the template.
Here's the back of the template. You can see the excess that will be routed away.
And after routing.
Later after installing onto the bulkhead the stem's thickness will be sanded down using another pattern so the knee of the head can be built up.
