GLakie reacted to texxn5 in Charles W Morgan by texxn5 - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Hi Tony, I am honored to have your approval Mate, thank you. I hope the base turns out like I think it will, it will be different and I think its cool to have a model mounted on a piece of the real ship...I was lucky and at the right place at the right time with the right person to be able to pull it off. Probably another week or 10 days to finish that too. I'm waiting for a belt sander to come in.

Hi John.
Great idea to use the wood. The ship is amazing, I just log on and admire it.

That's going to make a great base John. A 14" bandsaw would be just the ticket for trimming and squaring that slab up.

While glancing at the pictorial illustrations, it shows that they recommend planking the false decks before installing them. I never do this and I will not do it on this model either. Yes, it might be easier planking the deck on a flat surface but and here are a few big buts: Most false decks never fit well right out of the box and must be coaxed and adjusted and even twisted a little to fit, secondly most ships have a slight arch to the deck from side to side and not flat, three I can get a much better and closer fit with the planking boards once the false deck is mounted, fourth most plank on frame or bulkhead kits actually require you to mount the bulk heads to the false keel and then place the deck on before securing the bulk heads with glue and this kit is no exception to this.
So I glued and nailed the decking down and then mixed up a fairly thin mixture of wood glue and water and then using a stiff paint brush, I covered the joints with the glue mixture which is thin enough to whisk into the joints for a better glue job.

Thanks for all the comments and likes, folks. I expected to dive back in but my sinuses said "No,Sir" since Christmas. I am bummed.
I'm planning to do some bends with the hair dryer, ala the Maestro's technique. I may see if the Admiral has an unused curling iron, too.

If you can do them in wood, you can do them in brass. You've got the machining down perfect, Grant. Great looking guns.

That's a nice Christmas present! Maybe if you used a rust solution it would make the bands look less shiny? That's just an idea though.

Hi Ken,
These are all important lessons for me and my Armed Pinnace.
Regarding the bending of planks, I also use some old curling tongs the wife discarded, seems to work a treat.
Keep it up mate, I'm watching.

Hi John,
I like your idea on the base mate, definitely different and as you say will have a nice flow about it. It will certainly fit in nicely with the Morgan.
Well done John, you certainly have a ship to be proud of.

I admit to being a little confused by what it was you are trying to achieve ( I have but a simple mind ) until I saw the last few photos, then it all became clear.
I like what your doing here Captn and will be watching very closely.

Thanks for the info Richard. The gap is a bit wide, I'll have to try using a piece of wood clamped to the tray.

Thanks for that mate, answers one question, the other is:-
When I turned my guns I had a small split in the wood and it exploded on me, how on earth did you turn your guns with a damn great hole in them ?
We can discuss the merits of the Sherline next time we chat mate.

Thanks Mobbsie. I used the Sherline lathe for this job, not the wood lathe.

Hi Grant,
Those guns are gob-smackingly good my friend.
They both look superb on their carriage and will look even better when all the ironwork is in place.
If you turned those barrels out on a wood lathe using hand tools then your in the wrong job mate.
I can't wait for the end of January to see your next update
