Yes you need the Medium size....will be making those today.  Literally cutting them right now.  My measurements have the ports at at 3/16" x 5/32" however at 1/4" scale.   It wont matter though.   Just wipe them down first.   If you want them really black very lightly sand the horse shoe part of the hinge with very fine sandpaper...like 400 grit.  That gives them a nice finish based on my testing.   But not the hinge pin because thats raised and you dont want to sand that away.  These are the actual medium hinges below right out of the laser.  Tough to photograph as they are black.  These have a smidge of weathering powder on them before I removed them from the sheet.

    Railings

Began working with railings.  Found, after several tools, this one from Small Shop worked best for me.  Railing shown on top of forward search light platform.  Dividers help with spacing, take a measurement off the platform, and use them to establish the length of the railing section on the tool.

Forward mast platform railing.  Set the railing back from the forward edge, and used right angles, trying to curve the railing around the platform a little to ambitious for me.

Its just a small square of 1/8" thick cedar with all the ports and planking and even treenails laser etched into it.  It was the quick and dirty cheat of making a mock up.  LOL....I do love that scene in Back to the future though.  Made me laugh Greg.

    AND....

Sweep Port Hinges will be available soon.  In fact the largest of them will be in stock tomorrow.   I am making 3 sizes.   The first will be the largest size which will be used on Speedwell.  The sweep port lid hinges will fit 1/4" to 9/32" sweep port lids.  They are made from the same material but very thin.   They have etched details such as raised bolts and hinge pin details.  I hope you can see the details in this photo.   Also

The next sizes will fit 3/16" sized sweep port lids and then a smaller size for 1/8" to 5/32" sweep port lids.

Sold 24 per package.  Just give them a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove any dust from the laser etching process which will leave nice blackened hinges ready to use straight out of the package.   You may even want to add weathering powder before you remove them from the sheet.

Also note the image below shows the wider 1/16" gun port lid hinges.  Excuse the crude mock up to show the products.

Also, keep in mind that solder is not good at bridging a gap between two pieces of metal.  It works best if the pieces are lapped tightly together, particularly in conjunction with a low viscosity liquid flux.  Applied with a small model paint brush, this flux seeps into tiny openings between the pieces to be joined.  When the joint is heated solder is drawn in.

That's good news from Toni and James.   These do seem to be weird times as such.  For awhile this weekend I wondering if it was sunspots and solar flairs as they were in the news.

No, this is an entirely different thing.

The site's security certificate has expired and I'm dealing with the host in getting it sorted. It really is nothing to worry about.

Thank you Greg. Your kind words are very appreciated.
Also thank you so much Dave, Steve20, Steve, John and Jim.
Chris your work with pear was an inspiration to me.

Thank you all for stopping by and the likes.

On a side note I spent the last couple of days doing a deep cleaning of all the cabinets, drawers and counters here in the shop. Rediscovering items I forgot I had and items I wondered why I still had.

I also will be out of touch for a couple of weeks. Going on a two week journey across the pond to England, Scotland and Wales with the Admiral. For all of my friends in the UK, watch out for the crazy American trying to drive on the wrong side of the road! 🤣  🚑

    See you later!

    Goedendag,

After a bunch of custom fitting of many planks, I set to work on some somewhat mindless repetitive work on the 30 oars of the Oseberg.  I used the dowels and blades from the kit.   Cut the shafts to length, cut out the blades, tapered the shaft ends to fit the blades, glued on the blades.   Used a razor to taper the edges of the blades.  Sanded everything smooth.   From what I could find, the hand-handle ends of the oar shafts were simple tapered down to allow a hand to hold fast to the oar, so this is how I made mine.

    Have a cheery day!

Welcome to MSW.  Good advice from everyone else but I'll just add a suggestion..... start a log when you decide.  It's the best way to get help and meet other modelers.

If you want to get as much as you can out of this hobby, you will be doing alot of research and questioning.  You found an excellent website for that.  After you settle on the model you want, you will want to know which tools to get.  That topic also exists.

Happy modeling...and remember, you can never have too many clamps.

As everyone else has said there is no "best" beginner model. As someone who is in the middle of their first model, I would suggest paying particular attention to items 1 and 2 on Chris' list. You will make a lot of mistakes and so this means that:
You don't want to have problems with the kit itself adding to your already steep learning curve You are unlikely to produce the model of your dreams with your first attempt You may aspire to build a three decker some day, but I would recommend picking something smaller to make all the inevitable mistakes on. Then once you have the experience of completing a model you can move on to the subject you have always dreamed of doing and maybe actually do it justice.

I can recommend the one I am working on (Alert by Vanguard Models), but there are many other suitable alternatives.

Now Available as 1/16 wide hinge straps.....Syren gun port hinge mini kits.

They are laser cut from a special high density plastic.  Some prefer a wider strap.   Also great for the Winnie.  Those can easily be shaped differently too, being extra wide.   There are 36 hinges per package.   They can be made shorter if needed as well.

    1.  What a hinge looks like straight off the sheet.

    2. Round off the bottom with fine sandpaper.  Drill a small hole for the split ring if needed.  Use a #76 drill bit for a 28 gauge wire ring.

    3.  What the gport hinge pin looks like straight off the sheet.

    4.  Sand the actual pin slightly thinner and to a point.  This will be inserted and glued into the hull above the port.  Also  insert and glue a length of 28 gauge black wire into the laser cut hole and cut off the excess as shown.  Use CA glue as it is plastic.

    5.  Join the hinge strap and hinge pin by slipping the wire pin into the hole of the strap.  This makes a working hinge.

Once glued onto the port lid, you can sand the straps even thinner.  Just gently sand the face of the port with fine sandpaper and taper the hinge straps even thinner if you like.

Apply weathering powder if you like that look.   Make some split rings (not shown) and add them on the hinges as is typical.

    Isaiah,

You can edit your posts after you have saved them. Click on the three dots at the upper right and select "Edit."

If you click on an image after you put it in your post a window opens with several options. You can change the size of the image, assign it to the left or right margin (or none) and change the aspect ratio. This will let you post two smaller pictures side by side or have text beside the photos. However, this can be tricky and you will have to experiment. It is a good idea to add a blank line or two before and after photos to be sure text is not wrapped around pictures.

Unfortunately the layout you see while editing is not what the saved post will look like. You will see the actual layout only after you save your post. Sometimes you may screw up and close the post before you are done. As long as you are still logged in the forum will save your "unsaved" post. Just start a new post and your earlier text and photos should reappear.

However, this doesn't always work so I copy my text occasionally and paste it into Notepad or another text editor just to be safe.

    Current steps: Priming and painting.

I expect painting to take a while, as I'm planning to paint the outside white and the inside green. I have been trying some new paint, and I expect the white to take several coats at least based on my tests.

I am also continuing trials with lettering, which are mostly promising but I'm still having some issues that I think I can fix in (what I hope will be) my final test round before applying the technique to the stern transom.

The nice weather outside is going to cut into modeling time at this point - I am getting out of my basement and house and working on some yard projects, including replacing some rotting wood trim. So - all of these add up to some extended time on the model steps.

    Be back in a while!

Both as a member/moderator of MSW and in my official capacity as Chairman of the NRG, I want to give a big Thank you! to our administrative team, Jim and Chuck.  As it was explained to me, this was a problem of not enough electricity to power some the servers and power outages to our data center server.  Thousands of sites were affected.  Also having lost a build log after the Big Crash, I am grateful that nothing was lost.  Thank you again, gentlemen.

Don't know if it's the age of the kit or just the way plastic was made back then but the kit plastic seems very hard and brittle. I snapped one of the push rods so easily while cleaning them of flash. Got to be real gentle with this old girl or she is going to wind up in lots of fractured pieces but will glue them back together as needed.

Look how weird this is. Hasegawa added some detail on one inside of a fuselage half and absolutely none on the other. The more I think about it, the less inclined I am to spend too much time trying to improve this old kit. I will probably be happier just taking care assembling it, giving it a decent paint job with a fresh set of decals and calling it a day. I have so many other projects I want to focus attention on.
