Hello, today marks two years that I have been learning how to build models. I join MSW two years ago and I think I have not missed to many days scene  then lol.  I have  been having the time of my life, meeting  people,  getting to know some  as well.

I was going to start  my Pegasus,  but wanted to finish my Columbus ships. As  LA Nina will be my next build20230518_214107.thumb.jpg.1adc9ad7ab296faa79116cd720cc7cea.jpg

Glad  to be part of this wonderful organization. Both the NRG and MSW have become important to me,  my recent panic attack 🙃 🙂  because I couldn't log on kinda  made that a little more clear.  So to everyone  who has put up a like or a laugh  thankyou so much.

It will be hard for me to control myself not to rush this because I will be doing the Pegasus  right after  the Nina. I do have a Viking Long Boat  to do as well but I thought I save that for when I get boared  with the Pegasus  lol.

I will definitely follow along on this one as I have just started the Mantua 1:50 Nina to go alongside her bid sister the Mantua 1:50 Santa Maria which I have bashed around a bit and is about half way done.

I’ll follow along as well. I have the Amati Santa Maria new in my stash. I am hoping you give me lots of detail on planking technique. Every thing I’ve done so far has been painted. I’m looking forward to seeing your approach to the planking. Do you have a build log on the Santa Maria?

Spoiler

a good start!

on this scale, it is better to show the layout of the deck board and imitation nails

I didn't make an imitation at the time and I regret it now

this was my second model (Pinta) without deviations according to the instructions

I would do a lot of things differently now

the photo shows that there are no these small details and that's bad

Well, first planking is finished, as well as the decks.  In my haste to get her done, I forgot to cut my decking planks to size, I used  a 80 cm , 40 cm butt shift  pattern . So I just penciled in the joints and nail holes on the poop deck. It will do lol.

It is a small ship, so by the time you get all the deck furniture on, there's little deck left to see. I noticiced that on my Pinta.20230522_190847.thumb.jpg.9d5784c89e4389562bc164836945b3ec.jpg

20230524_130148.thumb.jpg.88e34d314c8b6e3d8f209b576016dffe.jpg

The plans said start mid ship with the planks, so that's what I did. I put on the first couple of bands then started at the keel and worked my way up. Fitting the last plank in with very little  problems.. so I move on to the decks

So this is how she sits now, ready for final planking,  and the inside planks and cap rails. All in good time. We have to take a week off to attend the first Mate mother's  celebration of life in the next province over lol. I will be very anxious to get back  🙃 .  But thanks to the internet  I won't miss a thing except  my ship yard lol . Later, all my friends.   20230530_170648.thumb.jpg.282847faa65f17d393d0c4122ecb59de.jpg

:10_1_10: Ahoy everyone,  well finally work has rezoomed,  after a long serious  respiratory illness, I have recovered enough to get a few hour a day back in the shipbyard. Still get very tired after a few hours but a quick nap and I am good to go. I have lots of out side work to catch up on,  so work will progress  slowly at first.

The First Mate  is keeping a close eye on me so I don't get to exhausted.

I have worked on the deck as far as I want to go for now, because I will be doing the planking  and will be turning the ship upside down and everyway to get the planks on.. A few pictures  only, but It's  a start.

Very nice work, Bob. Those ships were so beautiful.

I like the planking, and the clever addition of fake "framing". Nice precise detail work.

Keep up the good work, but be kind to yourself and give yourself a chance to recover properly.

Well finally got to work on my ship. Seems I had to brake my foot , by dropping  a 95 pound  steel car ramp on it . Lol. I could use the break lol.  I was working outside for at least 6 hrs a day after, recovering  from what ever I had that hit me lol.

The first Mate is calling bs, lol but I have the swelling  on my side , iceing  it down,  daily.  For sure.

But on with the ship , making the stand  the same way I did for the Pinta  and Santa Maria.

20230731_141254.thumb.jpg.0c61083c916be36b15388f2addf7fde5.jpg

Bought these at Lea Valley's,  drilled holes for the screws To go thought then I just placed it on the pegs to see what it will look like after I finish  it.

I also finished the fenders on both sides  I think they turn out well.

So now that I got some time progress from here on in for at least 4 to 6 weeks should move forward  lol.

Man does it feel good to spend a day in the ship yard. Feeling  a lot better. My foot is still swollen,  but not as bad as yesterday  . On the Mend lol.

I got a lot done, stairs, colums, the winch, grating, the  cannons and life boat were done before.20230801_162622.thumb.jpg.9e3459f175a26bea49c73acd3c0a8394.jpg20230801_162507.thumb.jpg.0ec03a2e0d79d1a89aabeba71b28d1e4.jpg20230801_162438.thumb.jpg.cfa58169bce70f2b5dfecdeae76a6eee.jpg

Still lots to do, but is mostly  fun stuff. We'll it is actually all full stuff, glad I picked up this hobby.

So I am just making things up as I go along,  moving on to anchors tomorrow,  and then maybe the rudder who knows lol

But this is how she sits tonight. 20230801_164941.thumb.jpg.7efb27c387e2ef496c984e42f0716069.jpg20230801_204014.thumb.jpg.84ad9c682f6c6190b7d7062061af6949.jpg

Feeling a whole lot better today, an excited to get to spend another day in the shipyard lol.

A  big thank you to @Gabek , we found out that we live pretty  close, so we decided to get together.  Lol. After many failed attempts to connect  we finally meet and he brought over two mini vikings to row on my ship, they are amazing.received_289546777097065.thumb.jpeg.e89e2addce0ae9011c57c02a980b0a94.jpegreceived_2507313669426458.thumb.jpeg.33fcf2e3167210621af3e21e2bac026e.jpegreceived_672613534340262.thumb.jpeg.540589b3f83e5060a6c1212fccd109d3.jpeg

We talk all afternoon about ships , lanterns, piracy,

And most of all our love for building ships.

The First Mate  said we were like a couple of kids playing with their toys. It was a great afternoon,  one I hope repeats itself often.

So after Gabek left I went to the ship yard and  after playing with the vikings  awhile I got back to building. I sanded and painted  all the deck furniture then moved on to the whinch and anchors.20230803_184539.thumb.jpg.6225326578cafe04717d5f9245fd3bcf.jpg20230803_220642.thumb.jpg.7e2c71575eadb7f8d0e22a27d0be6d46.jpg20230802_175212.thumb.jpg.8c4b86ea38e3dd88c4b70868c90afa92.jpg

Then I moved to the life boat, all the eye bolts and rings had to me made, installed the bilge pump, stairs and grating as well all glued in tight.

So now it's on to the masts and rudder, possibly of putting it on the stand today we will see. Soon it will be just the rigging and sails. And then it's bring on the Pegasus  , I'm ready lol.

So today I finished the ship, less masts, rigging and the sails. But I don't think it will be that long before I finish it. The Nina has been the funniest of all three Columbus ships.

The making of the sails. The First Mate  handed me these sails last night I was so impressed , they will.make the ship.

 20230804_202734.thumb.jpg.3bb99f434c24f6b98babd1e365217e1a.jpg

So this morning  I made more coffee,  and soaked my sails in last night pot. I soaked them for about a minute or less then put them out side to dry. Which did not take long in this heat.20230805_115202.thumb.jpg.14844df240bde0bdfcd5623a71a291a0.jpg

After I had my fill of coffee  I checked and they were dry so I painted the red with really watered down red paint.

Then I had to look at the sail kinda in place , I think they are good. They are darker than the Santa Maria,  but Ligher than the Pinta.  So they look good .20230805_172109.thumb.jpg.33ed77b96417051096535a24ece2c482.jpg

Inching along,  I have finished the masts and yards. Just have to tie them on the sails.  Mounted the masts. They lined up.

The Pegasus was my last model in my stach in the closet.  So I paniced and bought another one today. It's an  Artesani Latinia,   King of the Mississippi.

Should be here by the end of the week lol got to have a back up lol.

That's all full steam ahead .

The rigging is already starting to bring out the beauty in her. As with the backup, I totally relate:-)  I did the same thing, except my next build is back ordered. The anticipation is almost as good:-)

Building is coming along nicely.  Had to make 35 eye hooks and rings , and installed most of them. 20230808_162351.thumb.jpg.58220b03f9bb647aefa3a6284b1056d0.jpg

Then it was on to the deadeyes and shrouds,  I have 6 left to do for the main sail but  tomorrow is another day.

I measured  and set the thrid hand and threaded them on. Then snuged up the  lines  and installed them on the ship. 20230808_142115.thumb.jpg.0eb34de8774847a2820534da10c22955.jpg

A thank you to @mrcc for  his  suggesting GAC400, for stiffing the sails . Easy to use, just brush it on, shape it to the way you want, add a little heat with a hair dryer and done.

Going to let everything  dry up , and wait for the main sail to dry overnight. Then she has 6 more shrouds, hang the sails, tighten  the lines and the FLAGS.

Got a big grin on my face tonight, maybe two more days. Then I should be able to rap this one up.

Then I have a lot of studying to do lol. Something tells me my next build might take awhile lol.20230808_221230.thumb.jpg.c5f52062e60a37f64bca55ebf510f648.jpg

Comes with 14 rolls of thread I am told lol.I got so excited  that I bought another model.  The Pegasus was the last one in the closet, and I needed a back up for my stash lol. Got a good deal on a King of the Mississippi  made by Artesania Latina.  But that won't be for a while. Talk soon my friends, I am sure Lol.
