Managed to get the bowsprit netting done. Took a couple of tries but I think persistence paid off.

Here is a picture of the actual netting on the Morgan I took this past summer that I used for a guide.

I made a miniature loom and wove the netting around pins that were placed at each intersection along the outside edges. The ropes on the edges were held in place using the slits in each end of the loom. After everything was woven, I took some Tex 10 thread and tied knots at each intersection to keep everything in place. Those knots are barely noticeable. 👍 Below is a picture of the loom. Nothing fancy but quit effective. 😜

Starting to work on the tryworks structure. First step was to figure out how to make bricks at 1:96 scale. An actual brick measures 2 1/4” high x 7 5/8” wide x 3 5/8” deep.   That makes my scale brick .023 x .079 x .037.   I decided to try printing a grid on regular 20# copier paper and then paint the back. Borrowed this idea from sail making on my Leopard build.

I have 3 different grids depending on how the brick is positioned. I used a scalpel and steel straight edge to cut the grid into strips. Then the strips were cut to the appropriate brick view length. This resulted in tiny little bricks which look like confetti for mice. 😂

Pictured below are bricks looking down at the top 3 5/8 x 7 5/8 (lower group) and next to the tryworks are bricks looking at the front 2 5/8 x 7 5/8”.

Below is the front step with top view bricks layed in place. The mortar is supposed to be 3/8 wide in full scale which comes out to about .004”. I am eyeballing what seems to look good proportionally. If anyone wants to check when I am done - have at it. 😜😁

I am pleased with the results so far. Next is to do the rear step. Then all 4 sides with the 2 5/8 high brick. Tedious work but I think the realism is worth the effort.  Just when I recovered from placing a thousand plus copper tiles I get to do microscopic bricks. This must be the “journey” part I keep hearing about with this hobby!😂

Well I guess it’s a wrap. I completed my Charles W. Morgan today. It has been an educational and fun 2 year journey. Thanks to everyone here on MSW for all the support. Not sure what my next build will be. I will take a break for a bit. I still have a 9000 piece puzzle of the Battle of Algiers. That will be a good project to take a break with.

Here are some final pics. I need to figure out how to make an album and mark the build log finished.

    Happy modeling!

    Thank you everyone,
I did go with the sheer poles for two reasons.  First, as everybody mentioned, there is no definitive answer so go with what you think.  Secondly and probably most important,  I had already installed 4 of them before I started reading about them.  🙂 Previously, I was just looking at other models and mechanically thought it just made sense to have them.  They are now part of my model.
    Thanks again for checking me.

We the day finally came, all the sail rigging is complete. The only things left to do is rig the cutting stage, attach the davits and then rig the whaleboats to the davits. Sounds simple enough…..yeah right!😂🤪😜😁

The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter!  😁

toms10 reacted to Kris Avonts in Adding a cheap DRO to a Proxxon XY-table
    Hello All,

I use my Proxxon micro-mill a lot when it comes to precise shaping of wooden parts. The complete setup consists of a MB 200 drill stand, a MICRO compound table KT 70 and a 230V ISB/E drill/grinder.

One of my frustrations with this setup is keeping track of the position of the end mill relative to the workpiece. How many turns did I already gave in the X or Y direction? Of course each decent mill is equipped with a Digital ReadOut system (DRO).

But adding such hardware to the KT 70 is not obvious, especially because the KT 70 is a ‘MICRO’ xy-table. I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it, so I parked it in a wish list. But then I saw that digital calipers were sold at 7.99 euro in a supermarket. I couldn't resist and bought 2 calipers guided by ‘it’s now or never’.

So I will describe here the process of adding these calipers to the KT 70. It is certainly not the only way to do it but it is what worked for me. And maybe it can inspire other members. So lets start.

The first thing is to dismount the complete caliper. Then the metal parts need some cuts.

I used a small hacksaw but soon experienced that the metal was quite hard and I had to replace the saw-blade twice before finishing the job.

I was afraid that these cuts would disturb the measurement principle. I quick check gave me piece of mind.

Then you have to decide where you want to attach the ruler part of the caliper and where the readout unit. After some puzzling, I decided to position the readout units close to the respective hand-wheels. The ruler then needs to be attached to a moving part of the xy-table. For the Y-direction I will use a 3 mm dowel pin glued in a filed grove at the ruler end.

To mount that Y-ruler as low as possible, a small cut had to be made at the right front corner of the xy-table.

This way the Y-ruler can be positioned horizontal as the check on the next picture illustrates.

Next the Y-readout needs a support. I found a complex metal (zamac) part that could be used when all excess material was cut away.

It will be fixed in place using the right screw (original screw replaced by a longer one) in the lower cover.
That is enough work for today, have a nice evening and see you back soon.

    Best regards,

    Kris
