Don: Congratulations on a beautiful model. The details are very nice, but I also like the mixture of paint and natural finishes. Wonderful job. Russ

Kenneth: The battle damage is hardly noticeable. Nice save. So far the head rails look good. Those are complex shapes and always a challenge. Russ

David: If you look at the Model Shipways Dapper Tom rigging plan, it will probably be very similar to what you have. The AJ Fisher Lynx privateer rigging plan is also probably very similar. Russ

This is an American topsail schooner, early 19th century. It is probably meant to be a War of 1812 privateer schooner or something similar. It is most likely a solid hull model. It might be an early solid wood hull kit, depending on the size and scale. Maybe Marine Models, AJ Fisher etc. Russ

Greg: I have said this before, but I think it is worth repeating. Soft soldering is akin to gluing two pieces together while Brazing aka hard soldering aka silver soldering is like welding two pieces to become one piece. Regardless of the stresses involved, which sounds more permanent and less likely to fail over time? Also, a soft soldered joint is difficult to hide whereas the hard soldered joint can be blackened and will be invisible. Once you learn to do it and have a little practice at it, it will become second nature to hard solder. Once I learned the basics of it, I could not figure out how I went so long without it. Russ

Sam: Thanks for the kind words. I had to experiment with the bead board to figure out what worked best. Not much time really and a lot of fun. Russ

A little sanding improved the appearance of the bead board. I think this looks a little more believable. Russ

Here is the dashboard assembly with narrower bead board. I think this looks better than the wider material. Still needs some trimming and fitting. I also think I will go with a smaller wheel. Russ

Carl: I will probably make another dashboard assembly with some smaller paneling and see what it looks like. Thanks. Russ

John: Thanks. There may be another version of this, but we will see. The wheel could be a tad smaller and the bead board might want to be a shade more narrow. It will not take a lot of time to redo it if I decide to do it. Russ

Here is a look at the bead board treatment for the bulkhead below the dashboard. The wheel is temporarily set to check for height which is good. The bead board will get painted white. The bead board is made up from 1/8" wide strips with both edges chamfered off. Russ

Just a little more progress. This was the perfect day to work on the model. Nice cool, dry weather. I am making some progress on the pilothouse. This pilot house differs from the trunk cabins I have built for schooners in that a lot of the interior is visible so I need to take some care to make sure that the interior details are presentable. This is all very rough right now, but it is coming along. The dashboard will have dials on it and the small bulkhead below it will have paneling and the wheel will be mounted just below the dashboard. There will be three windows in the openings across the front of the pilot house and the exterior will have vertical planking. Russ

Thanks. I came up with this general style for my recent models and I will probably use this style on other local boats as long as it is appropriate etc. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
