I may have to give it a try. The blue painter's tape usually does the trick. I will give that suggestion some thought. Thanks. Russ

The under body paint is complete. The water line is not as crisp as I would like, but I had to work on it quite a bit to get it looking half way decent. There are some areas right at the stern to correct, but that will not be a big deal. The color and finish seem okay. I just need to live with the water line for a while and see how I feel about it. I have two more coats on and it looks like that might be it. I will wait till Friday afternoon to make sure everything is dried hard. Then we will see. Patience is difficult. Russ

Sam: Thanks. It is a Canon. Nothing really expensive, but it has some nice features that are so much better than the cheaper Kodak that I bought last year. That was sort of an emergency purchase, having dropped my old Sony camera a few weeks before. The Canon looks like a keeper. I can put the lens right on the object and still get a clear photograph. Here some actual progress. I have two coats of dark red on the bottom. I just put this coat on a few minutes ago. It will darken slightly as it dries. Tomorrow I will lightly sand and give it another coat. The color is very close to the shade of red found on local boats so I am hopeful. Russ

Ken: Thanks. I am glad to have the new camera. I should have gotten a better one last year, but I broke my rule about buying quality. You get what you pay for. Russ

Rich: Excellent work. Your slightly smaller, scratch built replacement looks much better. When in doubt, slightly smaller is usually a good choice. It fits better into the scale of the model. Russ

Rich: Very nice details. I think you are right about the davits. That can become a very tight working space. Your deck planking is really good. I like the effect you have achieved. Russ

Balsa in Shipmodels
russ replied to F24Steve's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
If you have some experience with balsa and can make it work, I would go with it. I do not use balsa as I have never had any success with it. But go with what works for you. If the experiment fails, then little has been lost and you can try something else. Russ -

Nice work. This model is coming together very well. The extra deck details really a lot of character to the model. Russ

Your deck planking looks very good. Subtle treenails at this scale are very difficult, but yours actually come off pretty good. However, you are the one who has to be pleased. I would suggest one thought, though. If you are on board the ship, standing aloft on a spar and looking down, what would you see? The grain of the wood plugs would oriented to follow the grain of the deck planking so I do not think you would see very much except the deck planking. Maybe sand them out and move on? In the end, you are the builder so build the model that pleases you best. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
