Angarfather got a reaction from tarbrush in Golden Hind ex Pelican by Angarfather - 1:36
Aye, Mates,
many thanks for your kind interest in my new project.
I am building the hull in an unusual way. Instead of a first planking I glue in plywood between the bulkheads. Than I had to sand it into its shape. Here are some pics from this way.
This construction results in a very stable hull. Next. I'll plan the material for the wales, the keel and the deck beams. I still have a few pieces of mahagony that will work well for that. The planks I will make from pear. That can look pretty good together.
Cheers Angarvater

Thank you, guys for all your kind words.
There are only the stern lantern and the decorations of the gun ports to make to finish Utrecht. Therefore I have started the next project, an elizabethan galleon. It may be a model of Drakes Golden Hind. How Golden Hind looked exactly is unclear. I will use some plans I did find in two old german modeling books.
Okay now I will start the new build log.
Cheers Hartmut

Hello guys,
after a long time I am now back again in the forum. In the last three months there had been a lot of interesting jobs, two journeys and also time for modelling. But not enough time to post. With other words: time for modelling or time for posting. But now I will show you Utrecht today and of course some of the work steps .

Thanks to Patrick and Carl
Hello Carl, this colourfull design is the result of the researches which Ab Hoving and the other builders of the 1:1 Utrecht had made. I think that such wonderfull colors were usual in the baroque. Especially when the upper ten of the cityes wanted to show who they are.
Some pic of the mast, the loops of the shrouds and the back and fore stays
And the Heart block of the fore stay

Hello PatricK! Many thanks for your kind words!
As you wanted - some pics from the modelling of blocks.
First step: Drill in to holes at the end of the slots.
Second step: milling the slot in between the to holes
Next: forming the block by sanding
File in the groove for the metal fitting and drill in the hole for the axis of the sheave.
The fitting with its eyelet. 1mm brass soldered with silver
The finished block. The sheaves are made from 8mm aluminum
some pics of the rigging jobs.
the shrouds
The two back stays

Aye, Mates,
some pics from the last weeks. Next job is the modeling of the mast.
first parts to make were the chainplates. 2mm brass square tube. The eyes are silver soldered.
The full channel
To turn the lower mast I had to extend the machine bottom of the lace.
The masthound. Making this octagonal part by sanding on the milling machine.
The throat halliyard block . pearwood and aluminium
The lower mast
Next part: the bow sprit flagg stuff. A nice piece to make.
Best regards

Installed the mast, but not glued, the mast ring is glued to the deck. I never glue the mast. The shrouds will hold that. Served the shrouds. The clamps on the mast hold levels to make sure that the mast stays straight. The hemostats hold all the roping taught.

Piet thanks for the comment and everyone else for the likes.
I inherited lots of double and triple blocks and very few single. So I have been making singles from doubles. The setup below shows how. First I make the hole larger with dental drill reamer. Then fit the double block through one pin. The pins are stainless steel rods cut to size. Then I saw the block to get a single. Works great.
Mast and spars have been painted with Mars black acrylic paint from Golden. Blocks have been attached.
Once I start on the sails I will show the way I do it with a step by step faq. Also give some references that talk a little about sails.

I have started the next project, an elizabethanian galleon.
I use some plans I did find in two old german modeling books, Mondfeld, Historische Schiffsmodelle, a german classic from the early 70., and Stoeckel,Risse von Schiffen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Both authors showed very similar plans of an elizabethanian galleon, named Golden Hind or ex Pelican. It may be a model of Drakes Golden Hind. How Golden Hind looked exactly is unclear. But I like the plans, and they also seems quite right for the type Galeone of the english sailors in the time of queen Elizabeth Tudor.
Fist step was to modify the slipway. For the aligning of the frames on the keel plate I use a cross line laser
The plans
The bulkheads

Worked on the bits, re-did the 2 pieces that go across the deck that hold the sail (can't think of the definition). The rings that hold the ropes for the canons (which I will omit). Also finished the heart block from Ash.
At my woodworkers meeting I was given lots of cut offs and the treasurer mentioned that if I want his Dremel lathe I can have it for free. So next month I will be getting that. Looked it up on line, can't find any good pictures

Many thanks to you guys for all the "likes" and kind words.
Here are some pics of the current state of the model. The decoration figures are made of polymer clay. To make the figurehead was very fiddly. The lion of the full sized Utrecht in my eyes looks like a cartoon. But a very nice one. Iwasn't able to reproduce it in my model.
Lets have a look around the pavillon
Even the two water gods at the pavillion are rather strange guys than baroque gods. But,I did my very best.
Best regards
