Just got back into it really. will try to post some pics over the weekend. about 9 months ago I started a new job in emergency services, like your 911. so have been busy
getting my head around that. but rest assured I haven't given up.

Your usual high standard David! Well done. Do you use a lathe to shape the tops of the masts? They look great!

I decided to rig the upper shrouds before mounting the masts, because the deadeyes are very small and it's easier to manipulate the mast while working them.  See pictures.  One with flash to make the lines show up (but too many shadows), and one without.

I'll do the ratlines once the masts are mounted.

    Thanks,
    David

Masts and bowsprit are now up.  Pictures below.  Some of the holes in the brass fittings need to be drilled out -- important to do that before mounting them.

Now on to the yards -- there are 19 of them on this thing.

While some activities on masting are still continuing with bland rhythms, I started preparing the chain plates with their deadeyes.
Unlike those adopted on more recent sailing ships, such as those of my Soleil Royal (which gave me quite a bit to do), on this carrack they are relatively simple to build. For today I have finished preparing those of the starboard side, in the next days I will also finish the port side.

    See you soon, Jack..

Yesterday afternoon, with the friend and fellow model maker Antonio, we lathed the famous 12mm. rod destined to become the main mast. For this event, I had the opportunity to use a simply monstrous lathe, more or less 2-2.5 meters long, with which a pole could have been turned.

A heartfelt thanks for the unexpected help.

Today, in my workshop, I proceeded to complete the mast with its accessories and below I show you the model with all the components of the masting positioned, obviously excluding spars and beams.

    Sincerely, Jack.

Pictures below of the lifeboats and the anchor.  The hull is now complete (with the exception of the lifeboat parrels, which the manual says leave until later).  So it's on to the masts now.

Looking at splitting the kit to make it more cost effective over a period of time for modellers. Good idea I reckon. Will let  Emilio  from Amati explain more. He said he will make a post here to explain further.

vossy reacted to Cathead in Arabia 1856 by Cathead - FINISHED - Scale 1:64 - sidewheel riverboat from the Missouri River, USA
I made a bit more progress by permanently combining the texas and the pilothouse, then building stairs down from the latter. I also added the clerestory windows that support the middle (raised) part of the hurricane deck; these provide natural light to the central cabin that runs down the middle of the boiler deck. In these photos, the texas/pilothouse assembly isn't permanently attached to the rest of the model.

As I started to think through the paddleboxes, I came across a conundrum. Many photos of similar vessels show very wide paddleboxes. For example, see the Mary McDonald:

    Or the Alice:

Both images are from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse steamboat collection. These really wide boxes suggest either very wide guards and wheels, or that the boxes extend well past the width of the wheels/guards into the main hull. I can't determine from any images which is correct. Even the museum's Arabia painting (which I don't take as super-accurate) shows really wide paddleboxes:

The problem is, this doesn't fit the Arabia's design. She had really narrow wheels and guards, as can clearly be seen from the wreck photos:

So is it correct to give her narrow paddleboxes only as wide as the wheels (which makes logical sense to me even if it doesn't look like other boats) or should the boxes somehow extend inboard, over the boiler deck and onto the main superstructure?

Here's what I mean on the actual model:

Logically, it seems like the paddleboxes should only cover the wheel itself (dotted line on left). But the super-wide boxes on other vessels imply that these should extend further inboard (such as dotted line on right), covering the passageway. I can't figure out why any builder would do that. The model follows the wreck dimensions pretty closely based on extrapolations from the known wheel dimensions and other information, so I know my wheels and guards are right. Any thoughts on which approach to use and why? Note that I framed this photo to show the painting in the background for comparison. I don't know what to do.

I will definitely contact them. Given you designed her, drew the scale plans etc. do you still retain any ownership to the model? Could you not sell her as part of your current venture? As for cost; Amati are kidding themselves if they think junkies like us wont spend the big bucks on things of rare quality and beauty such as this! Sure, its not a kit that will fly out the door in the hundreds, but I bet more than a few on here alone would buy it.

Any chance you could maybe post a few more pics of your design in stages/completion? Fully understand if for copyright reasons etc. you cannot. Thanks for your work.

    Cheers

Wow! Thank you for these pics Chris. Any idea if/when a release date? Price etc? How come if you completed the proto type 4 years ago she still isn't released? What would be the overall dimensions of such a beast? Sorry for all the questions. Stunning work! I want one!

No waiting list, but you are looking a couple of years yet. There is a link on this topic with some build photos from Chris showing the prototype. In the next month or so, you'll be able to follow a second prototype build here on MSW as I do the Victory for their instruction manual. Stay tuned!

I prepared all the pieces that make up the masts of the carrack, with the sole exclusion of the mainmast due to the known problem with the lathe. At the end I took the decision to color both the masts and the yards: the masts are colored with yellow ocher paint while the yards in black. When completely dry, I sanded the pieces with very fine grain paper to give them an appearance of "used".

One last mention about the lathe issue: I had almost definitively decided to manually taper the mainmast but today I received an email from my common friend Antonio who offered me the availability of a "REAL" lathe located in his workshop. Obviously this changed all the scenarios. Next week I will also finish this missing element.
    Best regards, Jack.
