Cabbie got a reaction from Artesania Latina in Swift 1805 by stripehunter - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:50 - first build
Good Morning Stripehunter and welcome to MSW.
My first ship was the Swift 1805, and i think that it was very challenging for a first ship,
but a great ship to learn with.
BUT, do not be anxious to finish, you probably won't be happy with it.
There are a lot of things you need to learn, to do ship modelling, so you
might as well start learning how to do them now.
Look around this site it has all the resources you need.
So take a deep breath and relax so you can enjoy ship modelling.
It will be finished when it is finished.
Cheers Chris

Also are you reading that the Garboard plank is an even taper from stern to stem,
or do you think it is mainly parallel and just widens at the stern and tapers at the bow?
BTW I hope all is well up there and you are coping with covid 19 ok.

Good evening to all
Working my way through this model and finding it very enjoyable.
But can someone explain to me how and why the garboard plank has the hook down up to the stern post?
Not registering in my brain.
thanks Chris

Cabbie got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Books for general information
Good Evening to all.
I am looking for suggestions of what books I should buy for general info on English/European, boats/ships 16th to 19th Centuries.
Probably more towards Men of War ships, but not necessarily fighting ships.
I just received Mr May's The Boats of Men of War today and would like to build on that.
Cheers Chris

A quick productive trip to Bendigo this morning, I knew the book shop
had the Sailing Ships of War. But bought the other 2 as well.

Cabbie got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Drop planks and tapering
Good Morning Capt'n Al
Difficult job planking these sorts of ships and I was lucky that I had a full size replica to copy.

Be careful with what I say I am not, by any means an expert on old sailing ships. more like an eggspurt.
I think your 1st paragraph is close to the mark, but planks should not be reduced to less than half the original size.
The planking rules did still apply, the joins still needed to run in the right line.
I tended to to whatever I needed to do to make the plank fit, without doing anything too drastic.
Have a look at how my endeavour planking finished.I haven't had any comments about whether it is strictly within rules.
http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/11341-hmb-endeavour-1768-by-cabbie-artesania-latina-160-kit-fiddle/page-6
I didn't use steelers at the stern. I started out with wider planks at the keel which when tapered gave a natural curve upwards.
Planks were dropped under the wales as per the replica.
I Hope some of this helps
Cheers Chris

It isn't the first time and it certainly won't be the last! 😁
Seriously, Stephen, I am more than happy to answer any questions about the half-hull kit. Let me also encourage you to join the Guild. The quarterly Journal is a good source of modeling information as well as maritime history. And as Ryland says, members receive a discount on all the products in the store. But the Guild is much more than that. It is an organization comprised of like-minded individuals who want to promote and enhance our hobby of model ship building.

Here is new link. You can get additional discount if you join the NRG digital membership with $40. The quarter term NRG journal has worth more than $40.

I strongly recommend that you go to the NRG website. At the NRG store you can order the Kit set so you can start the project. It is well worth the money.
Check it out! It is well worth your time.

Cabbie reacted to ccoyle in Swift 1805 by Swallowtail - Artesania Latina - 1:50 - first build
Getting one's first-ever first planking done is a huge psychological hurdle for new modelers. You'd be surprised at how many folks get the false deck and hull formers glued together -- and then give up. So congrats on your milestone!

Really pleased with this so far. There is a little unevenness in some planks between bulkheads 1 and 2, but that will be easy fixed. The planking was tricky but I've learned a heap.

Planking progress.
Much measuring, tweaking, temporary battens and slow progress learning how to do this!
Ignore the broken one through the middle, it's a temporary alignment batten only. I'm pleased with how the drop plank has turned out in the bow and the stealer in the stern.

Cabbie got a reaction from maddog33 in Open Whaler by Neddie2 - Panart - 1:16 - bitten off more than I can chew
Hello Neddie just came across your log, your boat is looking very good indeed.
I think the first lesson to be learnt is "keep going", paying off for you.
As far as tools goes i use one of these.
Couldn't do without it, no quite PC for some but with the disposable blades, which last a fair while,
it makes a lot of things easier to do. I adjust the blade by tapping with a hammer down near the blade.
Cheers Chris

G'day All
Looks like I'm not the only member from Australia.
Just getting into the hobby. Only just bought the HMS Endeavour Longboat, and keen to get a start on the model. Have read all the build logs from other members. And will take all recommendations. May not post a build log as yet, but I will wait and see.
Have been doing plastic models for years and am a keen woodworker. Also make knives on the side.
Loving the hints and tips from other members. Seems like a great source of info and advice.

Cabbie reacted to André84 in Seaman Recruit taking ship
Hello everyone!
As my screen name suggests, my name is André, and I am from sunny South Africa.
Whilst thinking about a title for my introductory post, I stumbled upon an article which outlined the U.S Navy ranks. Applicably, I immediately identified with the lowest rank, Seaman Recruit, which is characterised as the following:
Apprentice in training being the key take away as I seek to learn about this wonderful craft, and to draw upon the wealth of knowledge from users on this awesome site - as I am new to this hobby (discounting a few plastic aircraft models I built in my youth).
I have been lurking around this site for a few months whilst doing research on tools, techniques, kits etc. and I finally settled upon AL's HMS Endeavour's Longboat as my first kit, of which I will begin a build log soon.
Glad to be aboard, and will see you around.
Stay safe!

Cabbie reacted to Ooglee in HMS Agamemnon by Ooglee - Caldercraft - 1:64
Hello, this is the first time I have done a build log for a model so please forgive me if I get a few things wrong. I live in the North East of England in a little seaside town called South Shields. I was an electrical engineer & managed to take early retirement a few years ago to do a bit of adventuring before I got too old and broken. I started this model about 2 years ago but had to put it on hold as a few other project got in the way, like getting an extension built and making the loft space suitable for a model railway. I have built a couple of wooden models in the past from Billing boats so it was an obvious choice to go for something a bit bigger, what can go wrong! I have managed to take photos as I went along so I have something from each stage. Not sure what the protocol is for adding photos like file size or type. Here are a few pictures of the first phase. The main frames & the lower gun deck planking. I just did the part that could be seen through the hatches. My intention is to make the planking to look as authentic as possible with caulking and nails.
That's all for now, I will add more pictures in the next few days until I have caught up with the build to date
